Hello:

My wife, who is from Sweden, does not currently have a drivers license or healthcare coverage. She has never driven a car before nor had a license in her home country. Has anyone here been in a similar situation? Are you required to take drivers ed school or because she is an adult she is not required? Also, has anyone had experience with healthcare.gov? I imagine she will get insurance once she starts working later this year and I already missed the cut off to add her on mine. We need to move quickly with an option as she will need to get refills on her medications in the next month or so. Thank you for any advice or personal experiences in these matters! Much appreciated!

Depends on your state. She may be able to obtain a learners permit and then take her driving test later. My wife did that and didn't need classes.

Most policies allow one to add a new spouse at any time. May need to send a certified marriage certificate.

I would agree with baron on both accounts. I don't think most states will make an adult take driver's ed. She would have to study for her written test, then when she gets her temps, practice driving with a licensed driver until she can pass driving test (at least in Ohio that's how it works)

My insurance cut off was sometime the past November, but we got married in May. I just send a marriage certificate to the HR person at my job and my husband was added mid-year. A lot of insurances allow you to add someone for "qualifying events" such as marriage, birth of a child. Check with your HR dept or insurance co, if that is the case she may be covered as of your wedding date.

good luck!
