How much is immigration lawyer will cost? Is it cheaper than $18k? We really desperate now. Don't know how to proceed.

Lawyer is not going to help you in any way. No way around AOS requirements. Either your husband need to start making more or he can move to your country...

+1 A lawyer isn't going to be able to remove the I-864 requirement. Concentrate on who can help with sponsorship or how he can make the extra money.

Thanks to all the responds. I really appreciate it. It's almost not possible to find a joint sponsor, as per our case. My husband has no relative other than his mom and no friend willing to help. Now we just pray to god that somehow things will settle soon. Pray for us too.

Have mom watch the kids so he can get a second job. Things aren't going to just settle and the requirement isn't going to go away. He's going to have to make something happen or delay the filing until such a time he has suitable income.

Have you thought about how you will live in the US if he cannot even meet the poverty line requirement? You say that you have no money either. I don't get how people (USC) think they will be able to support their wives/fiancees once they come over if they can't cover a measley $27k or $30k income requirement. I guess if you own a house that's paid off, then you only need money for food and clothes, it's possible.

That's what I always tell people too, and the answer's pretty much always the same. "but love!"

Which they say until they've gone through 2 months of the stress of poverty, and that suddenly changes.

What about the mother ? Does she live in the same household as the petitioner ? If she is retired and collects social security that is income . You can have the mother fill out the I-864A and be added to the I-864 . That would raise the household level , but hopefully if she has any income it would be enough .

If he can use assets, they must be readily convertible into cash. So that won't include the house he lives in primarily or his car if it's his only one, for example.

I do beleive that house is included since "property" is listed in the USCIS I-864 FAQ.

What can be used as assets?

Immigration laywer will be expensive ($1K-$10K) and will not help you to bypass the Aos. Your husband will have to fulfill the requirement somehow.

It's amazing how many questions can be resolved with a 2 minute Google search...

However, primary houses aren't usually counted because they are not easily convertible and would leave the family homeless. Secondary or vacation homes are another matter.

An immigration lawyer will not help with this. Not at all. Lawyers just file forms for you. They cannot get around the need for a sponsor with sufficient money to support you. All a lawyer will do in this case is take the money that you need to be saving to come up with enough to qualify on the AOS!

And I say this as a lawyer's kid. I have nothing against lawyers. But in this case, do not hire one. It won't help.
