K 1 Visa - Ottawa, Ontario

Also be aware that the process may take longer since you are not originally from Canada. Some people get stuck waiting between the time they get approved at the interview and when they get their visa. I don't know if Bangladesh is one of the countries that triggers that, but I would not make any solid wedding plans until you have the visa in hand.

we filed last September 11...NOA1 on the 23rd of September, and still waiting for the NOA2. No RFE, nothing. Given the interview delays, it will be several months yet for us. I am figuring minimum of nine to twelve months.

I had hoped to be heading down in April...at this point, I am now thinking it will be July or later, so I would not take chances delaying the application process. Remember you have 6 months from your medical date to actually enter, so if you are lucky and get a fast approval, you would be able to delay your departure if you wanted.

I am also in Ontario (was actually living in Ottawa until I thought I'd be able to visit my fella...they won't let me in any more since I'm an "immigration risk", so I honestly thought I'd have a of months wait, and be gone. Sad to say their wait times are worse than us waiting to see a specialist.

As previously stated, interview would be in Montreal, and that is the closest for you to do medical as well.

Good luck.

Medisys is easy peasy for the medical. Only about 10 mins from the consulate but it does take 3 days after the medical day to get the results back so if your interview is on a Monday, go no later than Tuesday midday to get the results back friday afternoon.

Thank you guys so much for the suggestions and guiedence. We are working on gathering all the documents and hopefully will be able to apply by the end of this month.

Got a silly question from my CSI, Homeland, Law and Order loving paranoid fiance. He bought some stocks/shares. We know he'll be required to submit all the infos about the stocks along with his other financial info. Apparently he bought a few stocks of "weed" :\ and he's worried that it's gonna "look bad" once they go through his documents. Is that really possible or is he just being paranoid. It's just stocks it's not like he's selling weed :S but he won't listen so he asked me if any of you could kindly have any information on how the embassy/State department looks at "moral judgement"

...they won't let me in any more since I'm an "immigration risk", so I honestly thought I'd have a of months wait, and be gone. Sad to say their wait times are worse than us waiting to see a specialist.

Hi dburnt! Your post got me thinking about travelling to the States. Am I not gonna be allowed to enter the States after we file the petition? [We usually try to meet every 3-4 months] And I'm the one who usually travels because it's harder for him to book off at work. If I show the documents at customs that we have applied for K1 and it's just a travel visit would they still not accept it? I mean why would one apply and spend all this time and money and energy after the process if they wanted to illegally stay there or not return back to their country! :S That's frustrating.. Is he gonna be allowed to come to Ottawa to visit me?

1 CAN still visit the USA...Many do with no issues, but some have troubles. My 2 cents is down below in my signature. Just never Lie!! And my Wife, gf, fiance, and then wife, visited me in Canada a lot as well! Is it guaranteed entry for both of you, no it never is--as only citizens have the right of entry--thus always bring proof of ties to ones country.

I nor my wife ever submitted any of our stocks/bonds that I can recall of--just the banking info. Best of luck

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

there are no guarantees. I can only state my experience...I had a letter from my employer, bank records, everything possible with my Canadian address (bank, credit cards, drivers license, ownership, insurance), and the POE officer said (and I quote) "anyone can change their address to be whatever they want, that isn't proof". Despite my pointing out that that would be illegal (i.e. lying about address on Health Card, Drivers License, Ownership, to your Employer), once they have made up their mind, there was nothing going to change it.

As Flames said, many have no issues, but many also do, and there seems to be a little more scrutiny in the past year or so (just going by stories on the news, in the paper and on these forums). My advice is to try, make sure you are honest and truthful (always good advice), but be prepared to deal with it if it happens.

For us, since he can't come here, it means finding a third country to have a visit (we did Mexico last month), and let me tell you, finding flights that don't transfer in the US can be a challenge!

All you can do is try not to let it get you down, and be prepared for a wait...I mean you could be one of the many that post with very short wait times.

Just because you're denied once also doesn't mean you'll be denied again. My ex SIL was denied one day and told to bring a bunch of documentation showing she hadn't overstayed. She'd left her daughter in her house in Hawaii (they owned a home there.) The next day she went back, no one asked for a single piece of paperwork and she breezed through immigration.

If you visit a lot having a NEXUS card is a good idea.

1 really can't say if many do or don't have issues to be honest, as only a small fraction find their way to VJ.Been here on VJ since 2004 and If I had to guess--more gain entry than don't! I have 1 cousin that has been doing it for years now and 1 would think she would get stopped, but never has. Even has a baby now and the father is in the USA. So who knows! All comes down to the POE officer. Have evidence, never lie and don't start making a big scene--your not going to win.

I was denied twice. First time, they questioned that I could have "that much time off" (it was for 3 months)...I went back with letters from employer etc., and denied again. The second time, they made it pretty clear that it wouldn't change - it's a flag on your passport, and they didn't seem to think even flying with a return ticket would be enough.

Everything is up to the CBP and how they feel...I clearly got a &*&, since I also got searched before they let me go back to Canada. Most action I saw for months.

Really looking forward to trying again with the visa...I have to admit it keeps me up some nights.

Damn that's brutal! In Ottawa I have to go through US immigration/customs before I board the flight.

Just out of curiosity...what happened to your luggage, if you had checked in any? Coz if I'm denied entry to the US here in Ottawa airport, by then my luggage would be long gone I'm assuming.. Good god this is way more exhausting I though it would be! My wedding excitements are slowly turning into mild panic attacks :\

We're working on the I-134 form. We're not sure what to answer for Question 11. "If you check "intend", indicate the exact nature and duration of the contributions. For example, if you intend to furnish room and board, state for how long and if money, state the amount in U.S. dollars and whether it is to be given in a lump sum, weekly or month, and for how long." I guess "forever" won't be an appropriate answer? :\

I believe they'd just not put your luggage on the plane. Depending on the airport, you may still have your luggage with you (Calgary is like this, you have all of your baggage with you when you go through customs, but Edmonton lets you drop it off first...) It's normally not loaded until right before you get on and you have to be going through customs 2 hours earlier than your flight. LOL I never ever took a checked bag because I never stayed longer than a week so why would I need a checked bag full of clothes?

Also please check the VJ examples, it shows how to answer for Q11. :)

They (try their best) to remove your luggage if you don't make it on the flight - it's a policy called "positive match" to prevent people with bad intentions from not boarding the plane and leaving their luggage on.

Thank you everyone. We are in the process of collecting all the documents..I panic easily and I have severe anxiety issue so this is gonna be a huge test for me huh.png

I'm not sure if it's relevant or if I'm over analyzing this.. but one thing I forgot to mention is that I was married before...I got married when I was 19, lived with the person I got married to, who's from Europe for 3 months and then he moved back to Europe. Since then I was separated/ out of touch with him for over 3.5 years. Arranged marriage. Couldn't file for divorce because of family pressure and all that for a long time. I started dating my fiance about 2 months before I officially filed for divorce in Ottawa. My divorce certificate was issued while I was already in a committed relationship with my then boyfriend now fiancee. My fiance and I have been friends since way before I got married to that person. Is there a chance that the embassy will question 'morality'? Or wonder that if I'm "good enough" to be a US resident looking at the timeline of my friendship and my relationship with my fiance? I was separated though.. Also, I never applied for ex's immigration or anything. I sort of started to freak out while filling up the divorce information... and got a little sad. Just a tiny bit.

Also please check the VJ examples, it shows how to answer for Q11. smile.png

Thanks a bunch! Q11 is all done! smile.png
