I had to get that off my chest.

PT Cruisers are poorly engineered. I'd never buy a Dodge/Chrysler after seeing some of the engineering nightmares they produce. For example, to get to the battery in a Sebring, you have to remove the front passenger side tire because the battery is behind the wheel. That's ridiculous. Another example would be a lot of the later model Dodge trucks. In some, you have to replace the whole fuel pump assembly (200+ just for the part) in order to change the fuel filter.

Other issues of Chryslers:

  • with auto-shift Chrysler products, starting if the vehicle is in Park shortens starter life (I can remember owning one rigged up so it would only start in Neutral)--and this is true of the newer FWD just as much as the 60's/70's RWD vehicles
  • the automatics downshift at too high a roadspeed
  • fuel economy: I've seen 4-cylinder Chryslers (rentals) which got WORSE economy than a LeSabre

Usually, if a rental car company is about to give me a Chrysler, I adamantly ask for a European model or a GM.

But was the London-cab ever popular in the US? Basically, the PT looks like a factory-reject version of the London-cab (the Chevy HHR actually looks a lot more like the old Standard-10 companion than the PT cruiser--of course I don't trust US-made GM's with 4-bangers; my own Aveo is Korean-made, but I bought it due to necessity; I would have much preferred a Jetta or a Volvo).

I bet Saddam Hussein had a PT Cruiser.

Who ever the jerk was that design the PT Cruiser should have been fired from the company then hanged along with Sddam lol

How did the PT Cruiser come about did it come from an old classic car back in the 50s?

As I posted earlier, it still looks like a factory-reject London cab (except it comes in other colours than black).

I would say that GM's HHR fits your description better (the Standard-10companion was made from 1956-1959 in UK and limited quantities were also assembled in India from 1956-1961).

The fact that many Chrysler products say "Dodge" on them gives plenty of hint about the PT-cruiser.

(because that's exactly what one SHOULD do with the penta-star products)

Actual this is going to date me alittle... but the HHR looks more like a early fifties Chevy Panel... It looks very similar to my dad's 51' Chevy Panel.. 216ci 3 on the tree..

I was partly wrong on the production dates for the Standard-10 companion; it was 1955-1961.

I notice that your Panel has only two side doors, while the HHR has four (the Standard-10 companion was the first-ever station wagon with that feature). Here's a pic of one, though I'm not sure on the location (maybe Australia, UK; very unlikely to be India due to colour)

We call them "PT Losers"

I am happy with my current vehicle. I bought a Ford Fusion about 3 months ago.

1DET07.jpg

Mine is just like that, same color but I've tinted it and added a spoiler to it. It's a great ride...I enjoy driving it.

Did you compare it's performance to Toyota or Honda? Those two companies consistly make reliable cars in the compact range that I don't see how anyone would buy anything less.

Yes, it ranked higher than the Camry and Sonata both by JD Powers and Car and Driver. It was just below the Accord according to the Car and Driver but higher than Accord according to JD Powers. It has gotten great ratings since its inception. This is a mid-size sedan range...Sonata, Camry, Accord are in its class.

That's because it's Japanese engineering...

The new Fusion is built on a slightly stretched version of the very competent Mazda 6 platform. Ford owns a good portion of Mazda and shares a number of components including engines and transmissions with the Japanese company.

Agree: Japanese (, South Koreans) and Europeans usually design a car better for the passenger (compartmentwise) than do the Americans (as well as for engine performance relative to size). I basically use what I call a "millicento" test (meaning, would the seats fit my 6'1" frame as well as or better than a Fiat 1100 aka "millicento"?)--I have never found a US-designed car smaller than a Ford Taurus or Chevy Lumina which passes this test (some US-BUILT cars do, but they are Japanese designs like the Corolla, Camry, Accord--or as you've just stated, Fusion).

FYI, the millicento is a 1957-designed (redesigned with "regular" front doors in 1962, vs "wrong-way-swing" doors earlier--but the engine and drivetrain remained unchanged) lemon which was quickly replaced in its native Italy but survived in India (as Premier President/Padmini) till 1999 due to government protectionism.
