Never? No, but American automakers overall, fell behind German and Japanese automakers long ago and still haven't caught up. Why? Different business philosophy. German and Japanese automakers have a tradition of wanting to make cars that are reliable - that last. Their track record speaks for itself.

GM now offers a five-year, 100,000 mile powertrain warranty with no deductible.

When a car hits the 100,000 mile mark, it's a good idea to retire it and get a new one

whether it's American or Japanese.

What ???? Maybe your american you'd retire it...A Toyota or Honda is just breaking in.. Like I said earlier...I drive a 86 Toyota Pickup..186,000 miles.. My Ex has a 92 Tercel 160,000 .. This is where the imports shine... Going strong well after the last payment is made..

Not only foreign cars make it past the 150,000 mile mark.. My 21 year old Chevy is up past 160,000 miles and wont die for a while we figure.. The rust will get it first I'm sure.. All it needs is a new alternator cuz it can't handle my amps and subwoofer :( Our Chrysler is up to 136,000 miles.. My sister's saturn is up to 178,000 miles (well its in kms really but i've converted it..) Definately can't be "retiring" our cars after 100,000 miles..

I actually got 225,000 miles on my old Jetta (bought new in 1995).

Even on "lemon" millicentos, I've actually seen examples with over 300,000 km (pre-1989 model--yes, there is a subtle difference, though not substantive--so age somewhere between 20 and 45).

With many American models, you need to replace at least ONE engine to get 100,000 miles (on my Jetta, it was on original engine--one of my cousins had an Accord that got more mileage than that from 1983-1992, and its only problem at the end was that the clutch cable hadn't been replaced in awhile).

That is NOT ok. That's another thing I hate- when people put American flags all over their cars. This example is absolutely disgraceful.

Like this?

chevy_newUS.jpg

Yep! Bingo!

why is that disgraceful?

Cos they're so pretentious imo. Red for AIDS research, pink for breast cancer, yellow for the troops, etc...does that mean that if I don't wear EVERY ribbon, that I don't support the cause? Raise your hands...who here is NOT supporting the safe return of troops? Who here does not support HIV/AIDS and Breast Cancer cures? And since when did a car/evening gown become a billboard for what I support and what I don't?

And if I put a yellow ribbon on my car, does that make my beliefs any stronger....or is it not a little self-serving 'I care enough to put on this sticker' instead of actually getting involved and doing summat else a lil more productive.

i'd think no, if you don't have every ribbon, it does not mean you don't support the cause. but some of us with the ribbons certainly do

as for cars being a billboard, remember bumper stickers?

I don't have any bumper stickers on my car. But I also believe in fixing the homeless problem. Where's their ribbon?

To me, the ribbons just look all 'oooh, look at what a good person I am...I put a magnet on my car/ribbon on my gown!'

I'm very active in Veterans' Affairs...I do many things to support the troops...I don't need a ribbon to show it. Same goes for many charities which I support.

Perhaps not in keeping with the current "stream" of this thread, but the car that annoys me most is the Mazda Miata. That's the most ridiculous car EVER!
