Hi all- we're still waiting for our NOA2 (submitted application in early November) but thinking ahead to the Affidavit of Support needed for the interview, I have some doubts about whether I need a joint sponsor. From my research of people in similar situations I think I will be okay without one (I am the petitioner), but I want to make sure.

I started my first "big girl" job in August after finishing grad school/living abroad for a few years. So for the past few years, my income has been minimal (ie. nowhere near the required amount to be a sole sponsor). This year (Aug 2013-Aug 2014) my income will be $47,000. I work as a teacher so my contract technically is only for this school year, but will be renewed for more or less the same salary for next year. I'm still waiting for my employer to give out contracts for next year- hopefully by the time our interview rolls around.

I also have savings of approximately $95,000 (in bonds, savings/checking accounts, CDs, retirement funds, and investments in mutual funds- no real estate or anything like that).

My concern is- since I only started earning over 125% of the poverty line fairly recently (got my first paycheck in September), will I need a joint sponsor? My parents would be happy to do it but I prefer to sponsor my fiance alone if possible.

Thanks for your help!!

A little less than $15,000

For a household of two people you must meet 125% of the income requirement (around $19,500). Even though you didn't make that in 2013 I still think you'll be okay. But since when you send your tax returns and W-2 and you didn't make that much what you need to do is get your employer to write up a letter stating what your annual income will be. And don't forget paystubs too. From there that's enough for them to figure out you make enough.
