I have read and read and read all about filing Canadian taxes, and his US taxes. i am finding all different things.

Please let me know if this is right-

--I will file my Canadian taxes, as married (after coming as K-1 and getting married 10/2013) claiming my CAN income and RRSP's. Question- Do I claim his US income on my CAN taxes?

--He will file his US taxes as married, filing separately.

I have no US income, but ... QUESTION- is he supposed to claim my CAN income on his taxes? and do we need to fill out Form 8891 --"U.S. Information Return for Beneficiaries of Certain Canadian Registered Retirement Plans" For my Canadian RRSP

also, do most people do their taxes themselves or take them to a "professional" Is it super complicated to do?

I don't think you need to claim his US income on your Canadian taxes... Canadian taxes are based on residence not citizenship... you just need to claim what you made in Canada. You probably don't need to go to an accountant for Canadian taxes unless your taxes are complicated, but you might want to call H&R Block (or even Revenue Canada) to confirm that the number you put in as your spouse's income would be $0, since he wasn't a resident and he didn't earn any money in Canada. Other than that you should be able to do it yourself.

For US taxes, I really don't know. He should probably file as "married filing seperately" for this year at least, (so your income is irrelevant to his) until you also have US income, at which point you might want to get someone else to advise you whether filing jointly or seperately would be better for your tax rates.

But I really don't know anything much about US taxes so I bow to others with more knowledge.

I get an accountant to do my taxes, but that's because I'm a self-employed musician and music teacher, so the writeoffs are much more complicated than with the average person. I will continue to do that when we finally move to the US.

I'm concerned because now that I'm married (and we don't have the option of Married filing seperately in Canada, given that we both currently live here) I won't qualify for GST rebates next year, based on our combined income... but that's a topic for a different post!

I didn't think you'd need to claim him since you're k1 and weren't married while a resident of Canada. I did claim my husband (well I didn't claim him, I said we were married and what his income was for 2012 in CDN dollars) but I lived in Canada for all of 2012.

I still plan on getting my taxes done by H&R block. I"m going up to Canada for the end of March 2014 and will probably do them while there so I can do my US ones as soon as I get back. Which reminds me to call my old employer on Monday to make sure they send my T4 to me. I'm sure they will, but a little reminder won't hurt :D

Family emergency has made me need to go to Canada next week, so since I am there I made arrangements with my old employer to get my T4 ready. I figure I can get them done since I will be there.

Thanks for the responses. I will try stopping in at an H&R block when I am home next week.

p.s I am SUPER excited to watch some good Olympic hockey ..and alllll Olympics on CBC when I am there!!! -- the coverage here is just not the same
