Of course libertarians would argue that that is his right..... Personally I would dine in there, hope I am denied service, hire a civil rights attorney and sue this ####### for everything he got.

I think the only way he can legally do this is to turn his establishment into a private membership club. Not 100% sure

Of course.

Marvin is correct, just go somewhere else. Enjoy your life and be glad you are not like that guy.

Rather than waste money on an attorney (why do we always want to make attorneys rich?) I would prefer to open a restaurant next door, make it handicapped accessible, welcome gays and freaks, offer a menu in about 30 languages, put him out of business and make MYSELF rich.

Of course, I am a Libertarian, so I think like that.

All this idiot is doing is stating an opinion. ALL restaruant owners have opinions and if they ALL stated theirs then we would all be forced to eat at home or hire civil rights attorneys and life would generally suck. I like going out to eat, I do not give a rat's popah about the personal opinons of the owner of the establishment and pretty much make sure I keep myself and my family happy. Civil rights attorneys can all starve to death for all I care.

You're consistently short-sighted on this issue.

Firstly, how exactly does the restaurant owner know if he's serving gay people (for example). People don't generally wear clothing that advertises their sexual preferences - maybe in Vermont perhaps, but everywhere else? That my friend, is crazy.

Secondly, how does a person out looking for somewhere to eat determine which restaurants won't serve them based on the prejudices of the owner? Do places need signs that say "we don't serve 'freaks', 'f*ggots', the disabled and welfare recipients" so that people stay away?

Perhaps the reason that people sue idiots like this guy is that when most people go out to eat they have a reasonable expectation of being treated with a degree of respect and dignity. When bigoted people embarass them and single them out for ridicule, you don't think this just might be a reason for taking them to court?

This seems pretty obvious to me - and I didn't even say 'I', 'me' or 'my' 500 times to do it ;-)

Then it isn't your opinion, its a hypothetical. I state my opinion. I post under my name. Why would you try to avoid using personal nouns and pronouns in something that is clearly personal? Unless to have plausible deniability to what you say? You would make it seem that when posting one's own opinion or thoughts or beliefs that using personal pro nouns is a bad thing. Kinda weird. This is not an editorial, it is a comment.

If people do not identify themselves as one of those groups then how do they know bad service is because of that reason? Assumption? "If he treats me badly it must be because I am gay but even though he doesn't know I am gay" Nice.

But I am not going to argue with "you" because "you" didn't state anything as "your" opinion and I am not arguing hypotheticals...or anything else.

I stated my opinion. If "you" don't agree. tough shitski.

Everything in moderation Gary ;-)

The business owner has a right to an opinion, except when the expression of that unreasonably infringes on the rights of others.

The legal system allows people to sue for that reason. If you believe in the right to operate a business that arbitrarily discriminates against people based on the personal prejudices of the owner you should similarly believe in the right of the people being discriminated against to use the law to assert their right not to be discriminated against. Anything less is illogical. Lawyers provide a service, what that service is and who it is offered to are entirely irrelevant so long as there is a demand for it.

Why are you against CHOICE?

Now you said you'd happily patronise a restaurant regardless of the opinions of the owner. In the case of the restaurant in question, do you think that it's ethical or moral to eat at a place knowing that the owner unreasonably discriminates against people based on extreme personal prejudice? Does that make you complicit?

I realise this is a difficult concept, if you are a person without morals, but it is an interesting point nonetheless.

I still cannot believe the mods have left this very hurtful thread open. Glad I don't smoke poles, or I might be really offended. I think it is time to lock this travesty.

I have been gone all day since early AM moving my sisters furniture.

Anyway I come back and there are like maybe 5 posts all day.

It's the same principal as taxing people to death and be shocked when businesses move.

I thought places like this survived on traffic and web revenue?

Wow, that's alot to do in one day. Movers unloaded 18,000 lbs on Monday. Still unpacking, organizing, and moving stuff that won't fit to storage. I'm tired...
