we are seemingly out of stinky tofu.

I don't know of any place in Brooklyn or manhattan for stinky tofu. You gotta go to queens, where the Taiwanese peeps reside (along with their share of the fooks)

These marklin fooks are all over America....

I'm just not getting how there isn't money left over enough to get a license, which is maybe 200 or 300 max?

I think we discussed finances before and my husband doesn't make much more than yours and he barely worked these last two months and still we've got money for stuff and to pay off a lot of debt per month.

Jeez, why so much? Hubby's license cost 35 bucks. Even getting him an insurance policy cost less than a hundred.

J, I just cannot fathom why your husband is so territorial with "his" money. That alone would make me want to kick him in the teeth. There were times when only I wad working, and times when only hubby was working - regardless of who earned it, it still belonged to both of us. You shouldn't be forced to stay at home just because you're having trouble finding a job. :( Makes me wanna go bunch your husband in the head.

For us, there was the permit fee, the 8 hour course fee, the driving license test fee, and then the license fee. I think that was probably around 300 or so although I'm not entirely sure.

Agh, I forgot you guys had to do all that. Jeez, I'd have been pissed! What a PITA!

Do you have any joint problems? My right knee gets like that occasionally but I'm almost sure I'm going to have arthritis in it later down the road from years of sports. It really acts up during cold weather, or after I've been to the gym. Too much strain, I guess.

Um.....that's why Pennsylvania is broke and CT is rich :)

PA blows, I hate it here. There's nothing good about it - even our major cities like Pittsburgh, Harrisburg, and Philadelphia are hideous and rattled with crime. Bleh.

ok so...I have had the same problem for a week now. I can't crack it though so it hurts and i cant do much about it. I thought I will let it rest and it will be fine but it is not.

I wish I could take them. Need driver's license for that and without money to pay for it I cannot even do that. Hubs also feels like if I got license before him it would make him look bad (don't ask, I get it..don't blame him....he feels like a failure most of the time and I guess I embody everything he wishes he had the courage to do but doesn't..in a weird way it makes sense).

i'm sure you've already looked into some of these options but i'm a latecomer so if you have, just ignore me. :)

since transport is an issue, have you considered working from home till you get a full time job? i recall you saying you sing -- there's a rising number of people who want to take music lessons online these days (mostly adults, cos of busy schedules, and to cut down distance). my piano teacher gives me lessons on skype. he's in the UK and i'm in Singapore. it works out well because the late evening slots i want are his free slots in the morning in the UK. i pay him via paypal. it's not going to be regular work, but it could at least give you some spare change for buying a few things here and there. it may also be possible for you to give academic tuition via skype? i dunno how big a thing that is in the US and whether there's a demand.

also, when jonas was between jobs for a while, he did transcription work. it didn't pay well at all but again it was still money and he could do it from home while applying for other full-time positions. he found the job on elance.com

i don't understand why you need to wait to get your license before your hubby does, though. if he wants to "look good", then he should act accordingly! it is not acceptable to ask you to lower yourself just so he looks good in comparison. you are a saint for agreeing to this.

i have a knee injury from falling off a bus but nothing to my right hand. i hear you on the cold weather front...i always thought people were joking when they said they could tell it was gonna rain...and now i've become a weatherman.

yes it sounds like the same thing! i tried resting it, i tried splinting it...no go. will let you know if i find anything that helps.

I hear that is how much it is here.

And in my hubby's defense, he makes 1k a month and pays phone bill for his dad and his mom and his bro and probably someone else and that is all data plans I think so thats 250 right there. That leaves him with 750, I eat into his money too spending about 30 a week so that is 120 that is 630 and he buys himself snack cakes and breakfast sammiches and sometimes dinner for the family on friday so i guess he has 550 left. He likes to save and is used to saving his 1k entirely. Now he cannot.

In addition, he is not really one to do anything unless told a couple of times and even then it better not require effort or it won't get done. He tries in his own way. I realized not long ago that he is afraid of responsibility for anything or anyone or really trying anything. He got much better with money in a way....he wont comment on having to buy things anymore. Bought me dark chocolate yesterday I was trying to pick one that did not cost much and he just told me to get all 3 or 4 even. So ya. He is trying and I appreciate it.
