Soz, all I know of child support is that my mother refused to have my stepfather pay it because "that just keeps you connected".

Is being connected a bad thing?

My mother and I have two different answers for this:

Me; would have appreciated him being forced to pay into an account I could have used to loans, etc.

Mom: his contact means he has access to our family so he can afflict more abuse on us.

Me: He only has contact in terms of address.

Mom: that's more than enough.

Me: He found us anyway by posing as our friends on fb...so he knew where we were, what we were doing, etc.

Mom: -nothing-

I love a guy who looks like he could be on Criminal Minds as either an agent or a killer.

it depends on a lot of things. I can imagine a number of scenarios where being connected would be a bad thing.

I agree with you, I got child support until I was 21 and it did go to pay my educational expenses. I do wish the my ex paid more, because I do think our daughter deserves all the opportunities we got as children - the best schools, etc. I don't know why he would want to deprive her of that, or his parents because they certainly help out with the other grandchildren.

When you go thru "a friend of the court" your whereabouts is not disclosed to the payer.

But it's disclosed to me wink.png

^This. You don't have to disclose your address, but unless you are in witness protection, anyone is trackable these days.

we probably won't have the budget to get "extra" appliances right at the beginning, even used ones. i don't mind waiting, really. hell, i'm asian, give me a $20 wok and i'll cook you a 10 course meal.

I note my wife cooked a 10 course meal on a $0.75 wok recently. ;)

Geezers, I need tax advice.

Hubby and I filed jointly in January online, everythung went fine, and we got a reasonable refund considering we only worked a few months last year. Also, since we paid out of state fees for hubby's tuition, we got the refundable education credit, and that returned a good portion of the money we paid to the college. Just checked the IRS website, and it says they decided to deny the REC because I could be claimed as a dependant on someone else's return? Really confused, considering I'm pretty positive I can't, and also disappointed because that cuts our refund in half. We don't desperately need the money, but it would have helped out with hubby's medical debt.

Just wondering, do you guys think it's worth trying to get this sorted out, or should I just take what I get and be content? This is the first year I've had to file taxes, I really don't have much of a clue about this #######, and I've heard the IRS hotline can be a huge PITA... I don't even know how I could go about fixing the problem, or proving I can't be claimed as a dependant on either parent's return. sad.png Help, please.

ya, folk age 26 and under are sorta eligible to be claimed on a parent's tax return.

There's caveats to both sides (to be claimed must live at home and/or be a college student, to not be claimed requires something else) but

ask both parents if you were claimed as a dependent on their tax return for any and all prior years, finding out which was the last year you were claimed.

I had this issue when I took off The Green, it actually nixed 18,000 in fed monies for masters degree tuition so I went off doing something else that year (Dad had claimed me and not told me about it)

as to how to sort it - best to get in to a local IRS office with both parents, having letters of attestation / affadavits from your parents that you were NOT their dependent for tax year 2013. Hand it over to a human there, and ask that this proof be accepted as proof that you are NOT claimed as a dependent on someone else's return, regardless of the IRS thinking that you are eligible. Also ask that IRS Human to sit down at their computer and click the button to remove that tick on eligibility.

[the above was a paraphrase, based on what I know. I ain't quoting tax regs here, even though I studied them for this year]

I note whilst I lived in Dallas, I got 14 really good woks from dumpster diving outside the f00k restaurants. Of course, these went to my 'rescue China Aunties' group, you should have seen their smiles in getting the right gear.

Evening, everybody! :)

Gosh, I feel like #######... I have a runny nose and a sore throat... Not good. And I need to be in shape on Sunday, cause I'm going to a concert...

Hopefully all those medicines I've been taking will help me to get better...
