Cool. Thanks for all the advice. I'm gonna have to look into it some more this week.

Can you tell I have some extra money to burn? :P

Nah, we could really use a camera since we have none whatsoever.

Thanks again, everyone!

Whatever you get - make sure it has a rechargeable Lithium-ion battery. Messing about with AA batteries gets annoying and expensive.

I Love my SONY DSC-N2 though its expensive for $400, and no viewfinder .... like so much the way its a lithium battery rechargable, 3.0 wide screen, 10.1 megapixel .... very satisfied with the picture shots & zooming clearly plus automatically picture album could view in slideshow with background music that you could download and save it to the camera memory, more importantly the video capturing. so its like digicam & videocam.

I love my Sony Cybershot... Even takes 50 sec movies.. Which is great to just hear and See your SO when she/he is far away..

It will fit in your shirt pocket too.... Mines been to moldova twice.. and not one probelm with it in the 3-4 years I've own it..

mine it he DSC-P7 3.2 megapixels and 3x power zoom.. and Viewer(mini-window)

Anyone? This is kind of a big purchase for me, I guess. Looking for some opinions. Anyone bought a camera recently?

Our price range is around $300. I'd like something that also records video but that's optional.

Want good quality on regular sized pictures, decent quality on larger sized. It doesn't have to be point and shoot, can be a bit more complicated.

I'm looking at some Canon ones now and the one I really like is more towards the $400-$500 range.

What should I be looking for in a camera other than the regular specs? Battery life, memory card specs?

I don't know.

http://www.steves-digicams.com/ good place for reviews , as well as http://www.epinions.com/

We have a Fuji E900, nice camera, takes excellent pics, video. Only drawback is that its a tad bigger than what we like.

Bought my dad a Canon Sd 630, and wow, what a super camera. Small, yet it has a 3" screen on the back to view pics or video. Sure wish we had gotten the Sd630 for us.

Sony are great cams as well, but keep in mind, they have to use Sony memory chips, where as most other cameras can use any generic memory.

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

HI

I have a panasonic Lumix 3.1 mp. It has the stable image etc.. has the Leica lens and it has 10x optical.. which is great. My pictures are great. I had sent some to the costco to be printed out and it is super.

I think circuit city has them and they have a 5 mp one for around $300 or so I am not sure.

I was reading that a Hot buy for a great Camera was the Canon Sd 600 I think it was..and they said for a few more bucks you could get the Sd 630..

And your right about the memory...on the Sony's...but once you bought it..you have it.. but you do need to watch out and dont buy too big(MB) of a stick of memory..because like mine it won't take the memory over I think it was 64mb I bought a 128mb and it wouldn't work..

So double check any camera you buy... and make sure you know what the biggest MB stick your camera will read..

I disagree. I specifically looked for a camera with AAs. I've seen too many people run out of battery in the middle of a day of sightseeing. I like being able to just pop a couple of AAs in emergencies. Then I have a regular old AA recharger for normal use.

This is why I have two rechargable batteries with my Sony Cybershot... Now if I could remove the user error and remember to charge up the batteries..

I don't know.

Consumer report lists the Kodak c875 as the best compact for around 280. It has 8 megpixel and 5x opticial zoom For super-Zoom they recommend the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-H2 for 350 with a zom grater tha 10.

It mostly depends on what you want for a camera Size s always important t me. Hate luging some monster around.

I disagree. I specifically looked for a camera with AAs. I've seen too many people run out of battery in the middle of a day of sightseeing. I like being able to just pop a couple of AAs in emergencies. Then I have a regular old AA recharger for normal use.

AA NiCad batteries don't last as long as Lithium ion. They also make the camera weigh more.

You can also buy replacement Lithium ion batteries relatively easily for around $20. They have last at least 1000 charge cycles before they lose the zero point (which is also more than AA rechargeables).

I never really used the digital zoom - it magnifies the pixels in the center of the image, so even without the graininess you will always lose resolution with the digital zoom.

I guess it depends where you're travelling too. When I was in Morocco, it was very easy to just get a couple of AAs in a pinch. I don't know where I would have found Lithium ions.

You can order them online. I wouldn't have a camera without a spare battery for the same reason I wouldn't take a laptop without a replacement battery pack.
