I once flew London- Reykjavik- Minneapolis with Icelandair, like you say it was definitely no frills but also cheaper than the alternatives. Will look out for the one way flight option with them as the rivals are not cheap at all!

We are also looking at Icelandair - London - Reykjavik - Seattle - Sacramento. £472, cheaper than anything else I've seen, and I want an excuse to stop over in Iceland as I went two years ago and fell in love. A trip to the blue lagoon is well deserved after this bloody visa waiting game. The planes are also quite nice. They gave us Icelandic Christmas drinks and biscuits last time we flew, that was kind of cool!

Also if people are flying West Coast, maybe check out Air New Zealand? I fly them to LA and connect to Sacramento, they had one way flights for March at about £480. Their planes are really nice with almost brand new entertainment systems (can watch films before take off, order drinks from a touch screen, even in economy)

I haven't had a bad flight with them yet, their daily flight just gets in too late for me to connect to Sacramento, taking into consideration it may take longer to go through customs on our first POE. Want to leave plenty of time when we arrive before needing to connect to another flight.

I've never thought of using any of these other airlines! I usually stick to the ones I see on the price comparison websites and then I head to their main website :P

But wow, checked out Icelandair, one way to Las Vegas for £570? Awesome! Do you need certain documents to stop at Iceland, like a type of visa or anything? Might consider this!

Iceland is considered part of Europe, so nope, nothing special needed!

Having flown back to the states about 13 times in the past 8 years, I really avoid flying the major US carriers as I don't think they are that great. I was loyal to Virgin Atlantic for a bit, as I flew them for work for awhile and built up air miles, and generally their planes are nice in economy, but once I used up my air miles I just started flying with whoever. I have found air New Zealand do great deals, and their planes are really nice. I'm picky about my entertainment system on a 10 hour flight - I want to pick from a wide selection of movies! And although I've only flown Icelandair from London to Iceland and back, I was impressed with their service. I see that you have to pay for food on their flights, but that's not the worst thing! I also saw online that you can have 2 bags in economy from Iceland to the US. So if we bring a second bag from London to Iceland we'd only have to pay 35 euros, as it would be free on the Iceland - US leg. Still need to look into that a bit more, but that's a great deal if I've read correctly. Right now you can stay over in Iceland for free as well, for one or more nights.

I've noticed Air Canada also has good deals from time to time. Although, last time my husband booked a flight on Air Canada, all the flights ended up being operated by United! We had a really ####### trip on United when we first immigrated to the UK. Vowed never to fly them again. In the end, my husband said it was a lot better than 8 years ago, and he had almost all of the economy section to himself!

I certainly recommend exploring all the other options, I have found some great airlines in the past.

I always book my husband on Delta or the Delta Partners (Virgin Atlantic, Air France, KLM). I don't know of a way to use Miles to partially pay for a flight. We have booked one way on miles and a return on a credit card. I guess that is a way. Most times though that is not cost effective at all.

You can't part pay with any of the sky team airlines. I always try and fly Delta, but a lot of my work flights end up being Air France, If you use delta a lot its worth getting their credit card, can rack up a lot of miles that way.

Sadly my next trip is BA so thats a load of miles I won't use. I refuse to fly them if it involves any of my own money.

I went with US at Thanksgiving, and United for the immigration trip. I prefer US over United - on my flight from LHR-EHR one of the flight attendants was openly rude over the tannoy regarding electronic devices. Haven't flown any of the others bar Virgin about 5 years ago and they were stellar at the time.

That extra bag allowance was one of the other things that swayed us to Icelandair. As for food, we at in the airport and brought snacks on the plane...much nicer than any food we've eaten on a plane anyways!!!

And where do you fly from? smile.png

I usually fly from Heathrow with Delta, I have quite a lot of miles, anyone know if I can use these to pay in part for my flight? That'd be pretty cool biggrin.png

But yes! Wondering who you guys all fly with, and where from. What airports/airlines work out the cheapest etc?

Im not sure where you are in UK but we have only flown one airline 4 times in 7 months and it has been the exact same flight everytime. US Airways out of Manchester into Philadelphia, landing at 1:45 p.m. then short up on a puddle plane to Harrisburg landing at 4:40 p.m. I just looked in case you were considering. That economy flight is $856..book round trip vs one way. One way is double the cost.

I always flew NorthWest because they were one of the first airlines to have the "on demand" style entertainment in economy. Never had a bad flight with them. Was kinda gutted when they merged with Delta actually, although I'm reading good things about them on this thread (I've not had the chance to fly with Delta yet despite having several thousand Skymiles courtesy of my trips with NW).

A little tip btw for those of you who may not be familiar with domestic U.S. flying - fly Southwest. They're the Ryanair/Easyjet of America, but it's not just because of the (relatively) cheap fares that I'm recommending them. It's mainly because Southwest operate a fleet exclusively consisting of modern 737s, whereas the other main domestic carriers (known as "regionals") operate a very suspect fleet of decrepit MD-80s and the like, some of which I'm quite sure wouldn't get an air worthiness certificate in the Eurozone. Also, their pilots are paid a pittance - the Captain of the Continental plane that went down over Buffalo a few years back (pilot error) was only making $60k a year (that's really not a lot of money for an airline pilot - the trans-Atlantic guys flying the heavy iron make 4 times that). And the co-pilot (a young gal fresh out of training) was making less than $30k. And you all know what you get if you pay peanuts, right?

We used to fly KLM or Northwest route BOS-AMS-EDI but the layover times on the way back are just silly now.

Amsterdam has a very clean, efficient airport with lots to do between flights. There is an art gallery, casino, shops etc.

I've tried Aer Lingus but it stopped in Dublin and Shannon before arriving in Scotland. I now now that Direct is not the same as Non Stop. I was shocked when we stopped for the second time.I felt like I was nickle and dimed for everything. I even had to pay for a cup of tea.

We now use either Delta route BOS-LHR-EDi or GLA or British airways but we are going to be trying Virgin Atlantic on the same route in July. The short haul is Little Red but using Aer Lingus planes.

Always United non-stop Houston to Heathrow. Formerly Continental. I liked it better before United because miles never expired and various little perks like that.

I'm not bothered about service, but can't recall anything bad. I'm low maintenance and just eat the dinner and sleep the whole flight until I smell the morning coffee coming around.

I've always flown United (6 times). Once you get into their Silver category, you get nice perks like free upgrades to Economy Plus. I went with them first because they were the cheapest to Chicago O'Hare. I checked for each flight and they were the cheapest each time. I've used the air miles for hotels mainly. I was never going to get enough for a flight and to upgrade to business class would have cost air miles + $500 (I was sorely tempted on my last flight). I only had one problem with them when a flight was delayed by 3 hours.

That brings to mind some Continental things that the United merger took away. The bulkhead seats (nobody in front of you) could be reserved by anybody at no extra charge 24 hours before the flight. I always logged in exactly 24 hours early to check in online and switch seats. Now they are treated like a premium class seat.

Upgrade to first class with miles required no additional fee.

No checked baggage fee on domestic flights.
