I-864 Form Question: What if I have two Joint Sponsors?

Hi, VJers! Right now we're on the process of filling out the Affidavit of Support forms; we've already paid the AoS fee, and now NVC's just waiting for us to send the documents to them. There's just this one question on the I-864 Form that confuses us, because a lot of people have been giving us different answers. It is Question #1 on PART 3: INFORMATION ON THE IMMIGRANT(S) YOU ARE SPONSORING:

1. I am sponsoring the principal immigrant named in in Part 2:

____ Yes _____ No (Applicable only in cases with two joint sponsors)

My husband is the petitioner/main sponsor. I have two joint sponsors, my husband's father and my husband's stepmother. I have asked my Facebook group the same question, and some told me to check YES, some said to check NO. Technically I have two joint sponsors, so my gut is telling me to go with NO, but I really need advice from people who have gone through the same situation or are more knowledgeable about this. Yes you can have two , the petitioner will fill out I-184 and the sponsors will fill out I-864A

You do not have 2 Joint Sponsors. Your father-in-law is your Joint Sponsor who files an I-864. His wife would be his House Member who files an I-864a.

2 Joint Sponsors are only possible in cases where there is a principal beneficiary and derivative beneficiary. The first JS would sponsor the principal beneficiary while the second JS would sponsor the derivative beneficiary. THIS IS NOT YOUR SITUATION.

Everyone in your case will mark "Yes" to Q1 in Part 3. This is to state they are sponsoring you, the principal beneficiary.

The only correct time to mark "No" is when the JS is only sponsoring the derivative beneficiaries and not the principal beneficiary.

Hi, aaron2020! Thanks for the insight. I see your point, but what if my husband lives with them, too? Basically, they're combining their income to his so we can meet the income requirements. My husband is still in college and works part-time, so he can't meet the requirements all on his own, and that's where his parents step in. His father and stepmom files their taxes jointly, just to let you know, if it helps with helping me figure this out.

To combine all their incomes, then your fiance's father and stepmother would file as your fiance's Household Members.

Fiancé files an I-864.

His father files an I-864a.

His stepmother files an I-864a.

Why would you pick "no" when there is no derivative beneficiary?
