Is it okay to go from wearing hijab to not wearing hijab?

I have a question.

I have wondered about this for a while and I know it's kind of been discussed in other threads but I was hoping I could get some answers/opinions to my question.

Let's say someone wears hijab but after a while they just decide that they don't like wearing it or it is uncomfortable or the person doesn't feel safe wearing it. Is it ok to stop wearing it for those reasons?

I was thinking about maybe American Muslim women who wear it in the US but who get bad reactions and feel uncomfortable/unsafe with it and decide to stop wearing it. Is that accepted?

Is it a personal choice and a woman can wear it or not wear it and decide to stop wearing it whenever she wants?

I hope that makes sense.

I wanted to add that I know that some think they are supposed to wear it and I know others say it's not in the Quran. For those of you who choose to wear it, is it because you think it's in the Quran or is it something scholars have discussed?

Is it in the Quran?

Whew that's a lot of questions, sowy.

I'm sure that this has been discussed and I know some don't want to touch this subject with a ten foot pole but I'm just wondering how there can be contraversy or different answers when it comes to wearing and not wearing hijab.

Goodnight!

That is a matter of interpretation.

As far as people ceasing to wear it, I think that is up to the individual. Islam is not meant to be a hardship, and I think this is something a person can take into consideration in any personal decisions about their faith.

I think to wear or not to wear hijab is a personal choice.... I am not muslimah so it isn't an issue for me, but I did go to the mosque for a discussion on women in Islam, where several women in various stages of covering spoke about their choices. This was after 9/11, so it has been awhile ago, but it was interesting to hear what these different women had to say and see that they all had valid points.

IMHO, even though we have problems here in the States with ppl that harass muslims at times, I think there is still more freedom to make the choice here to practice your religion how you want and to show the outward signs uf it (hijab, men's head gear, etc). But also, in that freedom there can be limitations due to others lack of understanding . . . and sometimes what the law requires i.e. photo IDs for driver's license, etc.

wow .. what an interesting topic... and a touchy one at that. I'm almost afraid to post my opinion on it but I'm going to try.....

I have heard ppl say that it isn't in the Qura'an...but when I read Qura'an I read that a woman is supposed to cover all but her eyes... Maybe that was just my interpretation of it though. Since we have already discussed the reasons for wearing hijab, I won't go into that.. I will say that I feel it's the womans personal preference as to wether it is ok for her to go from wearing to not wearing hijab. I don't think any differently of a woman whichever way she chooses. I think God wants women to cover for many reasons and it is a shame that society is making it so dangerous for a woman to cover and proudly represent her religion.....

I think because I live near an extremely large University, MSU, I see people from all over the world. Two of the places I use to contract out two had people from everywhere. At least two women were Muslim women who chose to wear the Ha jib at work. They didn't have problems at all, in fact people were very curious about her. I think it drew more attn to her then it didn't. Both women were very sweet and young.

I also grew up in Livonia Michigan, and we had a pretty large Arabic population due to the extremely close proximity to Dearborn. *largest Arabic population in the USA. One of my closest friends was a girl named Abera. She was Christian by the way, but was friends with other Arabic girls outside of the school etc. Some girls chose to cover while others did not. None who wore were hassled, the ones who did not cover were sometimes hassled but by family.

So is the pressure internal (family) or external (general public)?

I am very lucky, I asked DH if he had wanted me to change the way I dressed. He said I dressed nicely now. LOL He hated my butterfly sleeves and lower cut neck lines... did I mention he THEW AWAY MY SKORTS??? However if he asked me to change my attire I would consider it. It is a very small thing to do. Unless it would interfere with a job I had, I would have no problem. That is what marriage is give and take.....

Happy New Year!!!!!!

I think he did a service to yourself and to the American people by throwing away your skorts.

I'm a little confused. He liked the way she dressed but threw away her skorts and said he didn't like her butterfly sleeves and low neck lines. Am I missing something???

Allah tries his chosen people through many hardships, but those who persevere through adversity, surrendering themselves before the will of Allah, shall be blessed with a superb reward.

-The Prophet Muhammad (SAW), as reported by Anas bin Malik

A time will come when the sky is torn apart; when the stars scatter, and the ocean drains away; and when the graves are tossed about, and laid open. At that time every man will be told what he has done, and what he has failed to do; and every woman will be told what she has done, and what she has failed to do.

-Qur'an, Al-Infitar, Surah 82:1-5

If that is how you read the Qur'an, it would be niqab that is needed and not hijab. I am curious as to where in the Qur'an you read this.

Amal I have not read the Quran but can you post where it says to cover everything except for your eyes? I am interested in seeing that. I don't see why there would be such a debate if it clearly states to cover a woman's body everywhere except for her eyes.

I know I have waivered in and out of wearing hijab.

It takes a inner strength to wear it in the states that sometimes I have

and sometimes I don't want to fight the battle of stares and all.

I know how anything difficult you do in the name of Islam is

rewarded with blessings, mercy, forgiveness, etc.. as a motivation

to strive forward.

I will say for me, it's a personal trade off. When I do cover, my inner

voice is so calming and at peace, but I have to battle thru the stares and

ignorance with patience, and sometimes I lack that.

When I don't cover, I feel more blended into society but my inner voice

is kinda disgusted I sold out LOL.

Hopefully I will find my balance.
