Hi,

I am on Student Visa and just graduate this February. I am about to wave my OPT and just submit the AOS application soon. Here are the two questions and hope someone could help me:

  1. I had a FreeCare last semester to cover my health insurance since I only had 1 class left, and my wife has Mass Health. I am wondering if I should buy a new health insurance plan on my own and cancel the FreeCare or do something else? I dont know is this going to affect my application.
  2. My joint sponsor does not has his birth certificate since he lost it 20 years ago when he came here. Is there any other documents could replace the birth certificate?

Thanks,

I dont think it is matter what insurance you will buy and of course, it will not affect your AOS.

You can get the copy of passport from your sponsor.

I believe they are only on the hook for any means tested public benefits you obtain as their income should be used to qualify for such benefits. If you went to a county hospital for treatment without health insurance then you would just be billed for that directly and be responsible for it yourself as it isn't a means tested public benefit.

Also, you have to have health insurance because Obamacare's policy. If you dont have health insurance, then you will get fined.

Can you explain more about the policy? I am about to cancel the FreeCare and buy one from any insurance company

If you become a permanent resident, then you need to have health insurance under Obamacare's policy. If you dont have health care, then they will fine you with some % of your income. If you dont buy your insurance on the second years, then they will charge you 5% of your income or something like that.

Obamacare required everyone to have health care. The insurance companies have to sell the health insurance to anyone no matter that person has existing condition or not.

I am sorry to border about this again, but I am not familiar with the US health insurance system after some research. So what should I do with my health insurance in the middle of somethings like this: just finish my education, applying for AOS, and getting a job after obtaining the EAD?
