Great points!! Rich and I started talking as friends and talked every day for nine months before he even came over to visit! We had nine months to work on and develop our relationship and had to rely solely on communication as opposed to physically connecting. When all you can do is talk to someone, you really get to know them! I know people who jump into relationships after a week, so when people express their concern with me meeting someone on the internet and now being long distance, it baffles me. I had a boss that was convinced that Rich was a completely made up person (thanks Catfish and MTV for putting that idea into every ones heads! lol) and that even though we had video chatted almost every day, he was "probably digitally manipulating it and lying about everything else too." HA!! :bonk:

Some people have really made me laugh throughout this entire process. And boy oh boy, doesn't it feel good to prove them wrong?! I have also had one or two people joke about the green card thing, but just like you, we weighed options of me moving there vs him moving here. We might not even stay here in the long run! Luckily as our relationship has progressed (and after they met him) there has been less and less from the peanut gallery. It makes me so happy seeing all these couples sticking it out even though the process is so hard and daunting.

Agree with this completely. When I first started telling people (friends and family both) about our relationship, some were very skeptical. I got the typical, "how do you know he's not just using you for a green card?" and "Can you really know someone when you don't get to spend much time with them?" I'd say that no, he's not merely after a green card; we mutually made the decision for him to move here vs. me moving there. And actually, I think he knows me better than just about anyone in my life. When forced to communicate like we all are (emails, text, skype, facebook, etc), I think it makes us that much more in tune with our mates. Sure, there are some who've been tricked, and I've read horror stories just in the few short months I've been here. But that isn't exclusive to long-distance relationships. Johan and I discussed how this would be a difficult process and that it'd make or break us. It's making us. :) Now if the USCIS would just freakin comply and move this forward!!! :clock:

Soo true! I have people acting like my relationship isn't as valid or "real" as others because we are long distance most of the time. Trust me, there is no funny business going on!! It's actually pretty insulting because I have had relationships with people who live in the same city as me and those relationships were never as strong, healthy, or great as the one I am in now. I have friends that don't seem to take it too seriously, especially since getting engaged, and it's really just made me realize maybe they aren't as good of friends as I thought they were. It's sad when some people can so obviously see what we have and would never deny the love that's there and other people just sort of shrug it off. Oh well! I really cherish those who are supportive and both of our families are 100% on board.

I feel exactly the same way!! It's like you read my mind!! Haha! And I have a lot of friends that have no room to judge when it comes to a relationships, yet they sure as heck do!! Drives me INSANE!!! You know what is getting me through all of this? Thinking of that moment I see him walking through the doors at the airport and running into his arms and kissing him for the first time in what will feel like forever!!!! (It's been 8 months since we've been with each other) And at the same time knowing that we will never have to say another tearful goodbye, never have to look at each other through a screen and wanting to just reach out and hold them! Looking at him in that moment and saying WE DID IT and how much happiness we will feel at that time!!!! I want that more than anything in the world right now. I crave it!!! I am just so ready for my love to be by my side!!! We need these NOA2's!!! For all of us and our sanity!! HA!

Looks like we are in the same boat. Sometimes it feels like those who are judging my situation are the ones who have no room to talk at all because they wouldn't know a good relationship if it slapped them in the face haha. I just got chills and teary eyed when reading the "walking through the doors at the airport" part because that is seriously going to be the best feeling in the entire world. That is really what we focus on all the time now. It's so awesome to know that we have already said our last goodbye, it made the last one a lot easier. I really cannot wait until we are all at that wonderful day where we're reunited with our loves! I hope we are still posting in this forum at that time so we can all celebrate together. Come on USCIS!! Look at what you are doing to us!!! LOL Any day now..

I think we are all in the same boat when it comes to skepticism! And I also can understand why some people would be concerned in the beginning. But I agree when all you have is communication, it really makes for a strong relationship because you know how to communicate to your significant other. I met my fiance playing Call of Duty and boy let me tell you the looks I get when I say that!!! But we started playing together through mutual friends, and then I found myself playing more JUST to talk to him! And then we just started talking without playing, messaging any time we weren't and that led to video chatting, then after 9 months of that we met for the first time...So the whole beginning of our relationship was based off of communication. And I have never felt more connected to a person (besides my daughter and obviously in a completely different way) than I have to Ben! As cheesy as it may sound, he makes me feel like me! And I think it is because he knows me so well! It'll be three years in June! :)

We feel the same way about residing here, long term. We may not be here forever, but at least until our kids are out of school.

When I was at the airport the first time I went to see Zack the customs officer, asked me who I was going to see, I of course explained I was going to meet my boyfriend. He asked how we met and I told him we met on the Internet and this was the first time I was going to see him!

He looked at me like I was crazy and then blurted out 'have you ever seen catfish, because there's some absolute lunatics out there sitting in basements pretending to be young men' I told him of spoken to him over Skype and I was pretty damn sure he was only a little bit of a lunatic he replied 'well as long as your not found chopped up on the side of the freeway it's all good' I didn't know wether to laugh or cry :')

The reason I started making videos of me and Zack together and posting them on youtube was to show my family and friends that we're just like any other couple! It's amazing how many people have contacted me through youtube and told me those videos have given them hope for there long distance relationships.

This forum is such a bloody amazing place, it's so lovely to connect with you guys!

Hahaha!! Rich's officer on his first trip over had the same exact reaction!! He was like "uhh are you SURE she's who she says she is?" and he showed him a few of my pictures and what not but the guy was still very skeptical. I know some people will risk it and meet up with people without Skyping and getting "proof" that the person is who they say they are, but I am sure most of us were pretty smart about it! I know I was. I'm glad you didn't turn up on the side of the freeway!!! ;)
