My husband and I married in San Francisco last year so our marriage certificate was issued there. I wanted to renew my passport using my married name before we immigrate. One of the requirements for passport renewal is DULY AUTHENTICATED NSO MARRIAGE CERTIFICATE for marriage abroad. What are the steps in authenticating a marriage certificate?

If you did the report of marriage, you only need to go to nso and get a copy of your marriage cert., just as if you were married in the Philippines. If you did not report your marriage to the consulate having jurisdiction over the place where the marriage took place, well, then it gets more complicated.

My wife and I went to a Phil. consulate outreach location, reported her marriage and she renewed her Phil. passport in her married name all at the same time. No big deal.

Hi sis. As I understand it, you can only authenticate your marriage certificate at the consulate / embassy of the Philippines who has jurisdiction over your marriage, as mentioned earlier. Thus in your case, you need to have it authenticated in SF. Found this for ya: http://www.philippinessanfrancisco.org/philippines-sf/consular-services-sf/faq-sf/#marriage

But since you are now back in the Philippines, I am not sure though if you can directly report it to DFA /NSO. Maybe you can try and give them a call?

DFA: (02) 834-4000

NSO (Civil registration): (02) 926-7333

Btw, as far as I know, It's indeed a requirement for IR-1/CR-1 visa applicants to have their passport changed to their married name, even prior the arrival of your casefile at NVC, IMO. Perhaps other IR-1s can chime in.

Is it possible to renew the Passport even if it's not expired yet in their Outreach Program? I wanted to change it to my married name now-

Yes, it is possible.

Thank you for your response.

It helped me a lot.

Do you have any idea how long it might take for NSO to receive the report of marriage?

Not sure, sis. Have you tried contacting DFA or NSO?
