As usual this began as a serious discussion (at least the other threads about this topic did). Risto doesn't start "serious" threads, only ones with usually anti-arab / anti-muslim one-liners.

I just questioned how Saddam was fascist and jihadist, as Risto appeared to claim.

People are too fast and free with the labels that the actual meaning gets left completely behind.

If you think Saddam was not a fascist dictator, you have no idea what you are talking about.

One liners don't make convincing argument.

It has historically NOT been unusual for even irreligious Muslim dictators to call a war a "jihad":

• Saddam was known to have made this as propaganda before (and during) the Gulf War (1991).
  
• Yahya Khan (who was a corrupt, adulterous drunkard--as even exerpts of his radio broadcasts showed) was also known to have used the term when the civil war (with Pakistan's then-eastern wing) which he started expanded into a war with India.

I think rational people understood that you didn't imply the actual microphone testing him for alcohol and his broadcasts being indicative of adultery and corruption.

Maybe. But that's not what you said originally, which was what I was joking about. You said he WAS these things, "as the radio broadcasts showed."

You are usually somewhat more attentive to detail and nuance.

BTW, slurred speech can also be "oft indicative" of medical problems, for instance diabetes or stroke. In and of itself, or even *gasp* coupled with a radio broadcast, it isn't "proof" of drunkenness.

Nope I don't - but I don't think the discussion is going anywhere on that score. You're happy with lumping Saddam together with Bin Laden, and ignoring the very real political differences between the different groups.

Yet his regime over 25+ years was famously secular. In fact, Saddam earned the ire of most of the middle-eastern world for just this sort of approach. The fact that he wasn't a religious nut is the reason that he was groomed by the US to act as a buffer against the likes of neighbouring Iran.

I think you'll find his religious sentiments extended only as far as whatever they could gain him.
