Hello VJ Fam,

My Mother in law will finally be visiting us here soon using her tourist visa.

We will love to have her here for several months, she has a 10 yr visa.

My question: is a round trip ticket required with a tourist visa or a open ticket do just fine?

Many thanks for your time!

A B2 does not strictly require a round trip (whereas the VWP does) but not having one might make it harder to gain entry.

Round tickets are much cheaper.

One way ticket for visitor???? seem the standard thing when visiting is to

have a roundtrip ticket with return date, if staying over the time given at POE

apply for extension at least well B4 date one is suppose to depart...A 10 yr visia

means one can visit for a few wks and return home, one can stay legally as a

visitor up to 6 mths but not on every visit, abusing the visa privilege will cause

it to be revoked ....Roundtrip tickets R sometimes cheaper and date of return can be changed

Depends on consul. They often ask when the visitor will be departing from the US and sometimes they ask to see the return ticket.

Do not believe Ryanair fly to Guyana.

My wife (then girlfriend) was denied entry as a tourist because she did not have a return ticket. It certainly raises the bar of suspicion if you do not have one.

Most airlines will not board a passenger to the US carrying a one-way ticket. The best course of action is for her to purchase a RT ticket and book the return date she wants so that if asked, she can show proof of a return ticket home. As a rule of thumb, the return date should not fall beyond six months, for it is rare the CBP will allow her to stay longer than that.

As a tourist, the ticket must be a round-trip ticket. She will be denied entry, on a tourist visa, if it is only one-way.

You are mistaken. A round-trip ticket is only a requirement for the VWP; when entering on any kind of visa, including a B visa, a round-trip ticket isn't required (but it is strongly encouraged for a B visa):

http://london.usembassy.gov/faq-visa-gen.html#niv121 :

"I have a visa; do I also need a return ticket?

If you hold a visa of any classification, including a B-1/B-2 visa, you are not required to hold a return ticket; you may enter the United States on a one-way ticket."
