It depends on what they said on their application as to the length of their proposed visit ... this information is available to USCIS...also, if they apply, stay while waiting for the response, and if their request is denied, they have to leave the country immediately or theycould have their visa nullified as a result of even a short overstay.

Usually it is best to request for short extensions. Most are granted especially if they have already been here for a short period (eg. 3 months etc) but if they've been here for 6 months already, it is usually not guaranteed that they will be granted the extension and you also stand the risk of having them accumulating overstays when they are denied. Also the adjudication is usually processed around 3 months. So best thing is, apply for a shorter extension if you REALLY have to and apply about 2/3 months before their I-94 expires. Good luck!
