I walked in last week to dmv office in evening for renewal of ID.

The woman there told me that i just need original extension letter(as i was carrying copy) so they can have look at original and take copy(they already have copy of green card on which they gave ID originally).

Also i got reminder letter at home for renewal of id last month,it was mentioned in the letter that only document needed to renew id is legal status in US.

They usually have all information on file,like id and green card but they just want the extension letter.

So i fixed an appointment at the end of this month and they gonna mail my id to home after that.

Also my green card expires in May so I'm not much worried about it.

This is the process in CA,i don't know about other states.

But i think any office in all states should need same information and should be well aware of all kinds of legal status and documents.

They should not say that they don't know or not sure about the document.

See, that's what I figured. They already HAVE a copy of my SSN on file, so i am confused about why I need it again...they are basically gonna copy the same card twice! If they need documents to prove legality, they should have a set list, and not just "oh, I don't really know...just bring it all in".

The lady who served me had no idea what an extension letter was.

I just tried to renew my drivers license today. Was told I needed so much more information other than just my green card, expiring license and extension letter. However, when I inquired a week ago about it (because I wanted to make sure that I had everything I needed...since they screwed me around when I initially got my Maryland license), I was told that I just needed what I stated above. Total waste of 4 hours. Not only that, the girl got very snotty with me and implied that I was illegal (apparently, until I have my 10 year card in hand, I am illegal, in her eyes). I know management won't care or do anything (as per the course with this location). So frustrated!

I was also told that my documents to prove legality may take a few weeks to be verified, but they aren't even sure about that! My license expires in a week! Yes I realize that I could have sent my ROC package off sooner, but stuff happens in life and things don't always go as planned! Why is Maryland so bad with this stuff, when I know of others in other states who had NO PROBLEM getting their license renewed with their extension letter and expiring card only? I need to be able to drive to get to class and to work (a job that I JUST started!). Seriously so angry...I just needed to vent.

Has anyone else had any problems like this? In Maryland or any other state?

I am dreading about my license renewal too as last time they did not accept my NOA nor the stamped passport when I went to apply for a driver's license. Someone messed up the dates on my green card so I actually had to wait for the replacement (which took a while) before I could apply. So much pain in the butt. Since we moved, I am going to try at another DMV office and maybe it would be less hassle.

By the way, how many days since you guys sent the package before you received your NOA letter? I have not received mine yet. I am also surprised that I got a reminder from VSC to submit my ROC application. I thought I read somewhere that they do not send you a reminder.

NOA usually takes 5 to 10 days to receive(from the date of their receiving roc package).

There are some exceptional cases i read who received it late or never received

They send reminder to everyone,people don't get it because they change their address,and it is always sent to original address on file.(this is what i can conclude from my experience)

I changed my address and informed uscis about it around 1 year back (even they cerified it by sending change of address request approval through email and mail both) but still received reminder on old address.That is the address of my friends now so they gave it to me.

The lady who served me had no idea what an extension letter was.

The lady whom i went to and asked was even not sure so she asked her supervisor

But if you brought today the original extension letter and ID,they didn't have to send you back.

By asking for green card and ssn they are questioning their own decision which they took while giving you the ID originally

I guess this really depends on states.

I live in MN and I have never had any issues with drivers licence renewal/replacement

I got my drivers licence 2 months after arriving in fall 2010 on an F-1 visa. It was valid for 5 years (expiring on my birthday in 2015) but had the status check of July 2013 (which was my I-20 expiry date)

Once I AOS'ed & received my 2 year conditional GC. and changed address, I applied to change address & remove the status check date entirely from the DL.

My 2 year GC or NOA expiry date does not affect my DL in anyway as my DL is valid till 2015 even though my 2 year GC expire this may, 2014

So I am surprised with the DL expiring on GC anniversary or extended for 1 year based on NOA posts I read on VJ

Or could it be that they ignored all those in my own case

That is good to know

Rules for ID differ from state to state,although they should be standard in all states

I guess this really depends on states.

I think this is the new procedure now. I have read in some threads before that they used to issue the normal 5-year license cards for 2-yr conditional GC.
