Does anyone know where I can get a certified copy of a UK Passport? I need this to file taxes for my husband and I in the US, but I can't send the IRS his actual passport which is what they are requesting. He needs it as he travels back and forth to France and we hope to have his interview in April/May which again he will need.

It says I can use a certified copy of his passport, but he is not sure where he can get that in the UK. He is located in Surrey.

Thank you!

They changed the requirements last year and Notarized or Apostilled copies of documentation will not be accepted.

The official word from IRS is here http://www.irs.gov/Individuals/International-Taxpayers/Obtaining-an-ITIN-from-Abroad

The Instructions for Form W-7 list 13 documents that can be used to prove foreign status and identity. A foreign passport is the only one that can stand alone (i.e., establishes both foreign status and identity). If a passport is submitted, there is no need to submit any other documents. If a passport is not submitted, a combination of at least two other documents, with at least one containing a photograph, must be submitted with the ITIN application. The IRS will accept copies of original documents, if the copies have been properly certified by:

**the government agency (foreign or domestic) which issued the documents, or

**employees of the U.S. State Department located in U.S. embassies and consulates abroad.

Probably not to you but maybe to him. Has he contacted them to ask? Or can he go to London? There were some phone numbers provided.

As long as you don't owe anything, an extension works, but you won't have 2013 tax return for the interview either.

How often does he go to France? If you prepare the tax return, he signs, you sign. Then he could 2 day the passport to you. You go to an IRS assistance center show his passport and turn in the tax return. They verify the passport and hand it back to you. Then they submit the W-7 and tax return for processing. You two day the passport back.

Remember you have to include his UK income from Jan1 to Dec 31 on your return and the statement electing his treatment as a resident alien for tax purposes.

Thank you Nich-Nick,

He goes to France often as his family owns a house there and I say they prolly spend a month there at a time. I can ask him to see if he can send it. Does he not have to be here for the verification at the IRS office? We already did most of the taxes. I just have to wait for one more form from my stocks that I own.

My husband does not have a paying job. He works sometimes for his father and in exchange he lives in their house with food and board until he moves here. It's been like this for a couple of years now. He does have a tax payer ID in the UK that I will make sure to add to the ITIN application.
