OPT expires soon and H1b sponsor - can I travel?

Hi,

I am currently on OPT with an expiration date of June 30, 2014 and my company is going to sponsor me for an H1b in April. After my H1b petition is filed, am I still allowed to travel and will be able to come back without problems? I know that I cannot travel during the cap-gap period from June-October, but what about the time before June? I plan on traveling home in either April or May. Wondering if that would be too risky because it is too close to the OPT expiration date.
