Haha!! Yes, I did pass the interview. She told me that I would get a letter in the mail of the oath ceremony. I had to do a name change and I wasn't expecting that. She told me that my last name has both my parent's last name and she asked me which last name I wanted to use. I said, the one that I have used all my life. I tried to explain to her that it's a cultural thing, but she said that my passports and birth certificate show both last names and they are legal documents. The interview took about 20 minutes. It would have been shorter but she kept telling me that she is not used to the new from.

Congratulations, bennobot! The quote above has me worried, though. My wife is from Mexico, and she has two last names (her father's first surname followed by her mother's first surname), which I understand is typical in Latin countries. Her two last names are shown on her green card, Mexican passport, Social Security card, and driver's license. Are you saying that USCIS will force her to drop one of the last names at the interview? I've never heard that before.

Thank you! I can't wait to take the oath and be done with fees and forms and anything else USCIS related. :dancing:

@Bennobot - Congragulations and thank you for the detail. I think everybody in that time will feel the same as your. You will free from USCIS soon. :goofy:

Thank you!! Ok, let me explain what happened. My passport and birth certificate has my dad's last name hyphen my mom's last name. As long as I can remember, I've only used my dad's last name on all my U.S documents. (i.e, school records, Driver's license, social security and any other important documents.) When I went to my green card interview, I also just used my dad's last name. The officer didn't question anything. When I went to my citizenship interview, she looked at my passport and driver's license and she said that the person who did my green card interview should have caught it and made sure to add my mom's last name to my green card and I-485. I explained to her that I've never used my mom's last name on anything. She then said, I understand that but your passport and birth certificate have your mom's last name so we have to go with that as your last name. A hyphenated last name. That's when she asked me if I wanted to continue to just use my dad's last name otherwise I would have a hyphenated last name for my certificate and any other documents USCIS related. I said, I want to keep using just my dad's last name. She said, no problem we'll just need to do a name change. On the application, I just used my dad's last name but she corrected it and added my mom's last name and filled out the name change section. Since your spouse has both her last names on all her USCIS documents (green card) then she can keep using that otherwise if she wants to drop one of the names (which I had done but not officially thru the eyes of USCIS) she can do that on the N-400. She shouldn't have any problems. I hope that makes sense. Let me know if you have any questions.

PS...I came in there and she looked at my passport. When she told me that my passport and birth certificate have the hyphenated last names I was a little surprised. She had only seen my passport but she mentioned my birth certificate so it was clear to me that she had reviewed my whole file before I got there. She asked me if I've ever been married and I told her no. She then went to the file and started to flip thru a bunch of pages. It was crazy how fast she was flipping thru them and all of a sudden she just stopped like she knew where it was in the stack of papers.

Congratulations, bennobot! The quote above has me worried, though. I was asked if I want it to drop my mother last name too, I said no, all my documents (green card, drivers license, social) only have my first and middle and one last name, she told me it was ok, that my certificate will have my mothers last name included, but I could continue without using it in my documents, not even my signature includes my mother's last name. so it looks like they offer different info.....

Looks like every officer has a different way of doing things. She basically told me that my green card should have had both my last names and that the officer during the green card interview should have caught it. I'm ok with dropping one of my last names but I hope I just didn't add more time to my oath ceremony. Although I went to the MN webiste, thru USCIS, that tells me when all the oath ceremonies are for 2014 and it looks like in Minnesota, they only do the oath ceremonies thru judges.

If you had your fingerprints done in Long Island City yes that's your office. Unfortunately for LIC things appear to be going slow. I saw a case from February 2014 waiting inline for 2 months for an interview.

Thanks for the detailed explanation, bennobot. It sounds like my wife won't have any trouble keeping her two last names, since all her docs show them.

Have you had any updates from USCIS about your oath ceremony?

No yet, the only thing I expecting is to be put in the Oath schedule. Because she told me the Oath Ceremony will be at the beginning of July, and normally they send the letter one or two weeks before the date.
