New middle name after marriage

Look at the State Name Change Rule in your State. Here in VA I'm not allowed to change my middle name to my old surname without court order. So now I'm processing my court order before changing it and my current middle name is still the same when I was single.

Any convention is acceptable in the USA, it's the PI you will deal with changing all your documents. Just trying to save you some headaches. BTW your husband is not stupid. I think it's good that each of you have an opinion.

What sort of issues do you think I will run into if I decide to drop my mother's maiden name and my maiden name when I get married? I'm planning to just use my given name (Irish) and my future husband's surname (McTavish) after we get married. Another question... do I really have to renew my Philippine passport even if I'm not planning to visit within the next 3 years? when am I eligible to get a US passport?

When me and my husband got married the notary says that "they" will not allow me to drop my middle name too... So I just ended up using a hypenated surname (my surname- husband's surname) and still use my maiden middle name. When filing AOS, SSN, EAD and AP... I got no problem. I am just not sure with PI stuff though...

Thanks, girl! I saw your timeline on your signature and saw you got a wrong middle name. You mean they printed out a new SS card using your maiden middle name?

How about your AOS forms? What middle name did you use in them?

That's what I'm concerned about, sis. It's just a little confusing and I hate getting into potential mishaps since my original g-325 during I-129 filing has this original "middle name".

That's also what I'm trying to find out, sis. Seems like the tradition in US is to never change the middle name. Our records with the DHS and USCIS has this original middle name too. For the US passport, you can apply for one when you're naturalized or become a US citizen.

My wife followed tradition and moved her last name to her middle name after marriage.

FYI If you plan to renew your passport in your married name the Philippines will only accept the traditional way.

Thanks, Hank! This is what I'm inclined in doing so, based on what I have read so far. By the way, did your wife used her maiden surname as her middle name in her AOS forms?

Yes, she did AOS with her (traditional) married name. Made things very simple by doing it that way.

Awesome! Thanks, Hank! good.gif I'll just use the hyphenated version on facebook and other stuff, but for legal papers, traditional way it is!

Yes .. In SS Card they allowed me to use my old surname as my new middle name (they are probably not aware about name change policy). When i filed my AOS, our immigration attorney filed the papers up for us, we used my middle name when I was single. She said I can't use my old surname as my new middle name. She also suggested to call the court house to ask the process of changing name because she was pretty sure I needed a court order before I can change my middle name. So I did, and they told me the same thing. I have my GC, EAD and AP with my old middle name. I will just change it once I renew my GC and have my court order.
