Good Day! I am looking to apply for a US passport to travel, I came here in 2000 when I was 17. My mum has been a US citizen since 1997, I was born in 1982 now 31 years of age. Someone told me that I do not need to apply for N600 to get a US passport and that I could apply for a US passort using my mums Certificate of Naturalization, my birth certificate and my GC since I fall under the child citizenship act of 2000. Does anyone have any experience with this? Can I go that route to apply for a US passport even if I am 31 now?

Any info would be greatly appreciated, Cheers!

Good Day all!

Came to the US in May of 2000 as a permanent resident when I was 17yrs old by virtue of my mum petitioning me who has been a US citizen since 1997, I was born in 1982. Now I am 31 been living and working in the US from 2000-present and my question is am I considered a US citizen by virtue of child citizen act of 2000?

Basically these are my questions:

-Am I considered a citizen by child citizenship act of 2000? If so, can I apply for US passport without a cetificate of citizenship?

-Since I am 31 now, do I apply for citizenship using n400 or n600 to be able to get a US passport?

I posted somewhat same inquiry on sub-category tab if I can apply for US passport without a certificate of citizenship but by my mums certificate of naturaliztion, my birth certificate and green card, but would also like to inquire here if anyone has any idea if I am considered a citizen. Any information would be greatly appreciated, Cheers!

You can apply for US passport if you can prove that you came as a permanent resident under the age 18. I hope when they admit you in 2000 they stamp you passport with a temporary permanent resident stamp. You will have to use that as a proof. You might want to apply N600 and get your file done with USCIS. if you are not in a hurry I advice you to do that. Get the certificate of citizenship before the passport. That well make getting a passport much easier. Good luck

Yes, came as a permanent resident and passport stamped on May of 2000 when I was 17. I turned 18 on September of same year. I will go ahead and apply for a US passport for travel purposes as that is the cheaper and seems quicker route for now. When I do get to save up on $600 chunk for n600, then I will go ahead and apply for that, thanks for the reply and suggestion much appreciated.

I will update thread for future references if need be to others on similar boat. Cheers!

Thank you for the move, sorry if I posted on top cat on inquiry about citizenship status. I thought inquiry on citizenship status would best fit there. All good, thanks for the help. Cheers!

The Child Citizenship Act of 2000 took effect on Feb 27, 2001. If you turned 18 in Sept 2000, then it looks like you missed the cut-off date for automatic citizenship acquisition under the CCA, and you'll need to naturalize before being able to apply for a US passport.

"Children who were 18 years of age or older on that date are not eligible to take advantage of the Child Citizenship Act."

You are not a US citizen. You cannot apply for the N600 or a US passport.

You were born in 1982.

In 2000, you turned 18 years old.

The Child Citizenship Act did not become effective until February 27, 2001. It specifically states that the CCA does not apply to anyone who turned 18 before that date.

You need to naturalize if you want to be a US citizen.

You are not a US citizen.

DO NOT APPLY FOR THE US PASSPORT CLAIMING YOU ARE A US CITIZEN. This can lead to a host of trouble including losing your LPR status or never qualifying for US citizenship.
