Health insurance while in US on K-1, not yet married

I'm wondering if anyone else has experience or any advice regarding obtaining health insurance prior to getting married on their K-1.

I'm eligible for my fiance's health insurance once we're married, but I am unsure of what my options are prior to then. When I visit him, I typically purchase travel insurance, but this time I won't be able to do so, since travel insurance claims can only be made once you return home (and I won't be returning).

Any advice would be much appreciated! Thank you!

I'm about to go see my broker about this. I've got emergency medical coverage that pays directly while visiting, but I suspect that once entering on a visa it's a whole different thing. Mind you, my dog insurance is good while visiting and until I actually adjust status in the US.

I signed up very easily for health insurance down here. I personally used CoventryOne and I signed up online. You can add different policies such as dental or go without dental. Plus it is month to month and can cancel anytime.

I banked with RBC and was not eligible for travel insurance as I was not traveling.

Not too much advice here but that is all I have! Hope it helps a little.

Have your fiance ask his human resources if they allow partners not yet married to get health coverage. At my company they allow this because there are a few same sex couples that weren't legally allowed to get married until recently but other people in long term relationships were able to take advantage of it.

I am also concerned about the same thing. Most travel insurance will not qualify K-1 visa holders as we are technically "immigrants" and they require provincial health coverage in Canada.

Here's a list of sites I've gathered throughout VJ that you can buy short term insurance from:

Remember, the key term is health insurance for new immigrants.

Hope this helps.

Regarding these "immigrant" policies. I am waiting on my EAD and GC, filed for them about a month and a half ago, got my NOA1's for them but obviously they are still in the processing stage but do I still qualify for those types of insurance? Trying to get something sorted since my wifes policy won't allow her to add me for some reason...

If you don't have an SSN, get one. It will make things easier.

Domestic partners for some health insurance is pretty much equivalent to being married. Check into that.

If all else fails, just look at some of the providers and get quotes to get it directly from them.
