BERLIN (Reuters) - A thirsty German sold his 6-year-old step-daughter's pet beagle to the owner of a bar to pay for beer, the Bild newspaper reported Friday.

The unemployed man offered to take the dog for a walk and then stopped at a bar where he convinced the owner to buy the 3-year-old dog for 40 euros ($53).

The man spent the proceeds quenching his thirst for beer. The bar owner has now returned the dog to its owner

Regardless of the legalities of the issue (or my personal feelings on whether animals are the same as any other property), I do think only a lowlife would take a possession he had given to his child and sell it to buy something that wasn't desperately needed. (Especially if it was something she treasured, which in my experience is *usually* the case with a pet.) And if it was to buy something they desperately needed, he should talk to the child first about it, not lie to her and sneak off with it.

If it was his own dog and not his daughter's, then I wouldn't have an issue with it, assuming the buyer was going to treat it well.

BTW I first read the header of this topic as "Man tells beagle to buy beer" and I thought that was much more amusing.
