Part of me thinks what right does the state have to end a life and that execution has no place in modern society but then I remember that he attacked innocent people when he could have gone to the Middle East and attacked a military base in a combat zone like a lot of jihadists do. He knew the potential consequences and he went ahead with his plan, so even a liberal like me doesn't have an issue with him being executed.

(CNN) -- Federal prosecutors say they'll seek the death penalty against Boston Marathon bombing suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, arguing that he acted in "an especially heinous, cruel and depraved manner" and lacks remorse.

The highly anticipated announcement Thursday means that when the case against Tsarnaev goes to trial, jurors will not only weigh whether he's guilty, but also whether he deserves to die.

For Liz Norden, it's one small step forward.

Her sons, JP and Paul, each lost a leg in the bombings, which killed three people and injured more than 250 at the April 15 race.

In a way it would be better if it were his older brother who was on trial for this, since he was the instigator of the plot.

Merits (or lack thereof) of the death penalty aside it's not worth arguing about. It's entirely in keeping with tradition that the US would seek the maximum punishment for this, just as it is that there are some sick puppies out there who enjoy the idea of others suffering, if they believe they deserve it.

OK so you could have watched a public execution - as in, the option was there.

State-run media, showing a public execution administered by the State. I imagine that would put the fear of God into anyone. Of course, it's the sort of thing you're generally only likely to encounter in a totalitarian state.

I know people who ran in that marathon (between the 2 and 3 hour mark and who were luckily back in their hotel room when the blasts happened) and as a marathon runner myself I think it's outrageous that someone would blow up an event like that.

That said, stories like this often prove to me that a lot of people are complete @ssholes. Just because they feel the guy deserves it, somehow we need to hear their twisted gloating and puerile fantasies about medieval sentences being carried out on the criminal. I don't actually think that the story is an excuse for this either, I genuinely believe that deep-down a lot of people simply have a sadistic streak.
