Up to 40 kids at Uintah Elementary in Salt Lake City picked up their lunches Tuesday, then watched as the meals were taken and thrown away because of outstanding balances on their accounts.

...

Jason Olsen, a Salt Lake City District spokesman, said the district’s child-nutrition department became aware that Uintah had a large number of students who owed money for lunches.

As a result, the child-nutrition manager visited the school and decided to withhold lunches to deal with the issue, he said.

But cafeteria workers weren’t able to see which children owed money until they had already received lunches, Olsen explained.

The workers then took those lunches from the students and threw them away, he said, because once food is served to one student it can’t be served to another.

Children whose lunches were taken were given milk and fruit instead.

...

The district attempted to contact parents with balances via phone Monday and Tuesday, Olsen said, but weren’t able to reach them all before the child-nutrition manager decided to take away the students’ lunches.

...

"This can be easily prevented," Olsen said. "We need to make sure proper notification goes out to the parents and they have time to put money in the accounts."

You guys talking about Sega are making me feel old! We had an Atari when I was in school....as for the original post, how idiotic. School lunches are a bit better than they used to be, I can remember having a bacon burger....that had no bacon on it. It was so bacon flavored piece of meat. And the square pizza was horrible, I used to put ketchup on mine to make it have some taste.

That is the problem here. I have no problem with giving kids milk and fruit if they have balances, but giving them lunch and throwing it out is just very poor optics.

I think they did that so they could smell it. Teach them a lesson

Honestly 1 idiot does not a nation make. I am guessing they had to ring the food up to see the balance. I find it hard to believe that information could not be accessed in other ways.

The appropriate thing would be let them eat that day, then send a letter home

The free loading on the govt has got to stop.

Sweet Jesus, me too. Though once I moved to the schmancy private day school, no school lunches for us. We had to brown bag it every day, except Friday when we could buy slices of pizza from Pepe's (currently ranked #1 pie in America) at lunch. Now that was a treat!

Also all of you whose video gaming started after Atari 2600, get off my lawn.
