Lagos Interview

Well everyone I am back from Lagos and here to tell you that we had a tough time.

We went to the consulate on 12/13/06 for the usual 7 am rush. My fiancee went in and I did not see him again until, 3:30 pm. When He came out he told me that He answered all of the questions no prolem but that the interviewer was not convinced. They wanted evidence that we indeed had been together since 2004. We were asked to return with eveidence on any Friday except for a designated few that the consulate would be closed. We retuned that very Friday on 12/15/06. They still would not let me in with him. So I waited. This time the same interviewer saw him and informed him that he would see him last. Another LONG day. He did indeed see him last, Justice produced the evidence that was requested answered more questions, then the interviewer told him that, He wanted to interview me but there was not enough time that day, we would have to come back again. This time 12/19/06 at 10am. We were there for the appointment but we still had to wait. This time a Nigerian man came out and called us, he took me up first, I could not help but notice that his ofice was in the Fraud Investigation Unit. I then asked him if there was a problem, no problem he said we just want to make sure this is not a Green Card Wedding. He detained me and questioned me for an hour. But He was convinced, I could tell, he said that he would take me back down to wait while he interviewed Justice. He kept Justice for 45 minutes, they both came down with smiles and I was told not to worry anymore, he would get his Visa, but not in time to come home with me. I am home, Justice is in Nigeria, we are waiting for the consulate to contact him. We were told when it is time for the Visa to be issued they would contact him. We are waiting.

I just want to say that we gave them NO REASON for them to think that we are not a REAL couple, I have been to Nigeria 3 times now, we had pictures, we had emails, we had plenty of evidence, we were very organized.

Wow! So sorry to see this happen to you. At least you know he will get the visa, but it's sad to have to deal with their "don't call us we'll call you" type of attitude. Omoba JUST got stuck in this same process. I know you two might be able to share some notes. I really hope to see them issue it soon. Good luck.

Seems like you had a very frustrating interview experience. I can not begin to think what would have happened if you would not have decided to be present for the interview. Would they have just straight out denied him the visa? I am happy that you were present so, if they had any concerns they could talk to you. I was waiting to hear about it and was hoping to be extending my congratulations on a successful interview. In the end you did have success just a little bit more of a wait and I am sure you are disappointed that Justice was not able to travel back with you. You two just hold on, I am sure things will be resolved soon and that he will be issued the visa. Keeping you both in my thoughts and prayers!!!!!!

Thank you for the kind words. I too wonder what would have happened if I had not been there for the interview. I think that my being there helped the situation. I know that this sounds crazy but it was like the initial interviewer did not like my finacee. He was really trying to trip him up, and even told him that he wanted to be the one to interview me but did not think that he would be able to. It reminded me of a battle of wills. I know that there have been some not flattering news reports (even on Dr Phil) about Nigerian 419 scammers alot lately, we both wondered if that had anything to with what happened to us or the way we were treated. 20/20 aired a report the night that I flew out from Denver, I found pieces of it on thier website, it really made all Nigerians out to look like they are all out to scam americans. I was very angry after watching the bias of the show.

I am really sad and sorry to hear what you had to go through at the lagos embassy and i agree that if you had not been present for the interview,it might have been a really different and negative outcome.I hope your fiance is contacted and issued his visa soon and all goes well.I want you to know that it is better late than never and although you couldn't go back home with him,at least you guys weren't denied which would have been terrible.I will be having my interview soon and my fiancee will be coming over and i hope we have it easier than you guys did.I agree with what you said about Nigerians being portrayed in a bad light and this makes some of the interviewers biased towards us which is wrong but what can one do?Take care,keep praying and have faith in God.Our prayers and thoughts are with you

I am really sorry to hear what you had to go through at the embassy. I agree that if you had not been there for the interview, it might have been bad. I hope he gets his visa soon! Praying for you both!

My fiance got only a "we will call you "and 'maybe in March' after the interview. Email responses to my inquiry were lacking detail due to 'confidentiality' and all I know is we are being 'investigated ' by the fraud unit to determine his eligibility to receive a K1.

We don't know if we are in AP , AR or what, also no additional proof or items were requested. No mention of security or name checks....

nothing .....we are in limbo and don't know the reason.

I did send an email to my state senator, something was not right with the way we were treated. I am not going to be silent and wait, I have sent emails everyday and I have tried to call but they only transfer me to a recording telling me to email. That is why I decided to contact my local senator, maybe I can shake something up. One of the police gaurds that we befriended told us they should contact us in about 2 weeks so we shall see. I am sure the holidays are slowing things down. they were closed on 12/22, 12/25,12/26 they will be closed 1/1, and perhaps 1/2 due to the death of President Ford. I was not told anything from the interviewer except that he was going to come to america and that I should not worry that it was over, that they would contact him. So if we are in AP or AR or what ever the heck it is, I dont know.

Sounds like you were where you needed to be. Who knows what would have happened if you wasn't there. I hope that your contact to the Senator do some good. But unfortunately, I think the handful who has been scamming out of Nigeria is making it bad for all others.

I have to agree with all that has been said. It sounds like someone was trying to set an example where nothing fraudulent could be proved. Why they would go to these lengths is ridicules. Please stay strong you are doing all of the right things from this point but you are also a victim of the holiday slow downs. Also I think they tossed the "march" date out just to scare you. Once your senator gets back from recess and the funeral I hope they can get some answers. I will keep you both in my prayers.

Wow, you must have had one of those rednecks. I guess it's just luck when you apply for these visas. You made an excellent move by getting your senator involved and you will come out on top if you stay persisted. I think they are only testing your resolve. Good luck.

I'm sorry you had to go through all of this . Nevertheless, I am thankful for the result. I too had to contact my Senator during the course of my husband receiving his K-1 Fiance Visa. The issue was not of course with the US Embassy in his country. In our case we received an immediate and pleasant response.

Continue to stay strong and focused.
