Hello all!

I am just curious if there is a specific time to apply for a social security card/number after entering the U.S.

My AP,Work permit and AOS forms are being processed,do I need to wait for the work permit to get back to me before applying for a SSN/card. I am unsure of how this works.

Also,in your experience how long did you wait for your work permit?

Thank you all!

I've always read to wait around 10 days before going to the SSN office.

I got mine even before getting married and then adjusted my last name/status after the wedding. I did that so I could get my state ID/drivers license

I do believe that you will need your EAD to apply for a SS card because you are currently out of status. Once you get your EAD, you are officially "registered" with US immigration and qualified to apply for SS card. Don't forget to bring your original wedding certificate when you apply. Once you get your SS card you can then apply for DL and open a bank account and etc.

Jan,2008 we met each other for the first time
March 11,2010, I flew to Dallas to visit him. We started dating.

January 23, 2012, we received our noa1
May 30,2012, we received our noa2
June 13,2012, Our case was forwarded to Montreal
July 4,2012, I received RFE
July 5, 2012, I sent out RFE
July 9,2012, Montreal received my RFE
July 16,2012, I sent out my Packet 3 (I did not call Montreal to confirm if they have sent out my Packet 3)
July 25,2012, I received my Packet 4 in email
September 4,2012 at 9:10 am, visa approved !!!
September 6,2012, Visa in hand
November 17,2012, POE in Chicago
February 09,2013, Wedding

Sorry, my previous answer was wrong..i think I got my social like 2.5 weeks after I came here on K-1 ( I went there first time around 10 days after my entry, they say they cannot find my info so I had to go back in again)...So if you did not do that soon enough before 90 days get expired, you will need to waiting for your EAD along with your original wedding certificate to apply for Social card.

They already filed for AOS, so they are not out of status. Filing for AOS puts you in a new period of authorized stay.

You need at least 2 weeks left on your I-94 before it expires in order to get the SSN. If you are past that point, then you need to wait for the EAD. It takes 60-90 days to receive. SSN > http://www.visajourney.com/content/ssn

My wife arrived on Sept 2, 2012 and we went to the SS office on Sept. 4, 2012 and got the card about 10 days later. Went back after GC approved on Jan. 15, 2013 and had the name changed to married name and the employment restriction removed.
