Hi,

I got here on a K1-Visa back end of August 2013 and got married end of september. We applied for my AOS in November and got our Noa1's. I was wondering if anyone has experiences with driving in NEW JERSEY with a foreign driver's license (in my case German). Since K1 visa holders/AOS applicants are not allowed to apply for a NJ driver's license until they got their work authorization card I am confused about what status I have at the moment.

The NJ motor vehicle commission says:

Visitors with foreign driver licenses

Foreign motorists with valid driver licenses from qualifying countries* are free to drive personal or rental cars while visiting the United States as a tourist and are advised to carry an International Driving Permit.

Who is considered a tourist?
If you are visiting the United States for a period not exceeding one year and are not authorized to work or attend school in the country.

Are we still seen as tourists since we're not allowed to work and nor are permanent residents yet??

Thanks!!

I think you should be fine, I drove with me mexican DL for a while here in Colorado. Although you have to make sure that the car insurance company will cover if you are using a foreign license, that's just in case of an accident, you never know!
