AMIRAK I saw that you posted over 4 times asking how much people paid to their attorneys, not just in this thread but in other thread as well. Attorneys charge $5/10k to file Vawa.If you can't afford to hire a lawyer, then find a pro bono lawyer to help with your case.Make sure first you have a Vawa case and not just a failed marriage.

Thank you Sandra. That means its too late to change to my maiden name, I filed all forms together, and put my married name on the i485 already, that means even with my divorce decree, they cannot change it back to my maiden name. Right?

They change if you ask for that, but you can't ask now, since you submitted the forms, but after getting the GC you can pay USCIS fee and fill out form l90 to change your name.you can try to ask in the USCIS interview. Not sure if they will.allow that or tell you to submit form l90

That makes sense now Sandra, I will wait for the GC first, Thanks as always!!

On December 17, 2014, we registered your permanent resident status and mailed you a Welcome Notice for Receipt Number .................. Please follow the instructions in the notice. Your new permanent resident card should arrive by February 15, 2015, after this registration or after you complete any ADIT processing referred to in the welcome notice, whichever is later. If you move, go to www.uscis.gov/addresschange to give us your new mailing address.

GabrielVawa..this is what I found out about what ADIT means..i just looked it up online. This is what was mentioned on www.alllaw.com

If you've been approved for a green card, you may receive correspondence from U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) that mentions ADIT processing. For example, it may read something like this:

"Your new permanent resident card should be mailed within 60 days following this registration or after you complete any ADIT processing referred to in the welcome notice, whichever is later."

What on earth is "ADIT processing?" Don't worry, it's just a simple step in the process, to which USCIS has given a fancy name.

Also, not everyone has to go through ADIT processing its primarily for people who havent yet received a stamp in their passport proving their U.S. permanent residence, or whose previous fingerprints had a smudge or other issue such that USCIS needs to redo them.

What Does ADIT Mean?

The acronym ADIT stands for Alien Documentation, Identification & Telecommunications System. It means that USCIS is calling you in for a brief walk-in visit in order to collect the information, photos, and fingerprints that it needs in order to create your actual green card.

By now, you probably know that USCIS doesn't hand you a green card as soon as it approves your case. If youre coming from overseas, youre likely to receive a machine readable immigrant visa" (MRIV) as proof of your status until your green card arrives. The green card itself will arrive several weeks or even months later.

If you were already living in the U.S. when you became eligible for a green card, and you are getting your green card through the process known as adjustment of status (more about adjustment of status), and you attended an in-person interview at a USCIS office, you may have received a temporary stamp in your passport called an I-551. This stamp proves that you are a lawful permanent resident.

However, many people adjusting status receive only a letter of approval from USCIS by mail. This approval letter is not ideal for proving your status, because it doesnt have your photo on it. So, at the ADIT processing appointment, USCIS will also put a temporary stamp in your passport called an I-551, proving that you are a lawful permanent resident.

Here is my experience as the papers go: I had medical and divorce done and submitted it as additional evidence during interview. My attorney made a little note of all additional evidence we submit and all updates. We submitted renewed G325 - with new addresses and jobs information. And the note said there is a change made to the I485 - my name (because I too thought it would be forever and took my ex-husbands last name). My attorney was sure to mention that there is that change and that I claim my maiden name back. I got GC in my favorite original name that I am never to abandon anymore=)) That is my experience=)) I had a new attorney that went to the interview with me and I paid less than 1000 for that. I think it is worth having a professional there, though my IO was a very humorous and nice lady!

Hello everybody I need your advise. I prepare all the evidence for my vawa. What do you recommend . Is better to get a lawyer or do it by myself

Hi Amirak. I just thought i would share you my experience. I filled my Vawa on my own initially. By just reading the forums, gathering infos online. However, i messed up my case real bad and now i am paying for it. My case has been all over the place. Now, thank God there are people here in the forum that helps people like us in any way that by advices and support. But IF YOU CAN AFFORD IT, HIRE A LAWYER. Two heads are better than one. I did not hire a lawyer not because i did not want to but because i had no choice. But that is just my opinion. A lot got their approval even without a lawyer also.

Hello everyone!

Yesterday I got a letter in the mail with the date of Dec 11, 2014 about interview for I-485 for Jan 14, 2014 lol yeah whoever made the letter made a typo lmao and put 2014 instead of 2015. But anyway I thought it would take a lot longer as I saw few people say that they had waited 5-6 some even more months for I-485 interview after VAWA was approved. And as you can see by my timeline my VAWA was approved on Oct 1. And now my I485 interview will be Jan 14. I have already gathered everything that I need to take to the interview thanks to Sandra. She really is a big help to everyone here looking for help and really appreciate it as I'm sure you all are too that have had her help.

Anyway just one more thing that I'm not quite sure about, so figured I would ask.

I have everything else the letter says to bring except for this that I'm not to sure about...

"Your petitioner's Birth Certificate and evidence of United States Citizenship or Permanent Resident Status."

This is a self petition, and I am divorced, so this would not apply to me, right?

Or would I still need to take my ex-wife's Birth Certificate? And if I do, all I have is a copy of it, would that be enough, because I would not be able to get an Original, and asking to borrow hers for it, well I'm sure that would not be a good idea :P lmao

Anyway, Sandra can you please let me know. Thanks

Oh I see, yeah the wait sucks lol so I had kind of knew it would take months as I saw others post so this is a good surprise for me as it seems its going pretty fast compared to others that I have seen post their timelines.

No I never did. Never filed anything when was married. And I filed I360, I485, and I765 all together as you can see from my timeline.
