Why? Because 1) The media and the gun lobby are repeating certain messages that people need to be afraid of everything and that having a gun protects them, and 2) because laws are being passed in some states where people are no longer required to give warning.

I saw a news show where a guy went and killed his neighbor for having a child's 2-year-old birthday party because the party was too loud. The shooter recorded the whole thing. As he was walking over, clearly the aggressor, he kept saying out loud. "I am afraid for my life. I am scared for my life." Then he went and killed a guy and shot 4 others. See, he had gone to "stand your ground" class and he had learned that in his state (Texas I believe) that if he could testify that he was "afraid for his life" that he could kill people. So he was careful to announce on his video that he was afraid. Thankfully after long deliberations the jury could see that he was trying to wiggle himself into the law to justify his murder.

I do have hope that these laws will be repealed.

1. Lets repeal freedom of speech so people can't say things you do not agree with. Or maybe we will just not allow them to "repeat" the message. A "reasonable" limit on a freedom, don't you think?

2. NO state requires you "give warning" before defending yourself. Who ever heard of such nonsense? Show me one law which says you MUST "give warning" in ANY state. I'll wait.

27 states do not require you to make a "reasonable attempt to retreat" before defending yourself. This may be what you refer to, but it is hard to tell. These are referred to as "Stand Your Ground" laws and SYG laws specifically exclude the defense when you can be shown to have "started it". This is why GZ never used the SYG defense in the GZ/TM case as there then would have been a question as to "who started it" This would also be why the person would be convicted in the imaginary case you presented. Personally, I think folks with mental illness shouldn't be allowed access to firearms. But I know folks here will disagree with me on that one.

You should pay attention in here. Some of the pro gun folks have made it abundantly clear they want EVERYONE to have guns. Slim and I were arguing about this about 3 weeks ago.

Most anti-gun people here only want responsible gun ownership and guns out of hands of people who wish to do harm to innocent people. And I think that's what most gun owners want too. But when you have folks in here saying let's give guns to everyone in broad strokes, it dilutes the argument.

My issue with the mental checks is its way too easy for govt to deny rights to an entire demographic of people they dont like. We've seen this throughought history, especially with gun rights. Ask Dr. King about his license to carry and the subjectiveness of govt decision makers.

I'm surprised anyone from any group thats ever been discriminated against suppoelrts measures allowing the government to do so again. Whags really crazy is you folks will throw around the racist charges in a second on something like voting rights but pretend its not even there when it comes to YOUR gun rights.
