Police Clearance Requirements

Hi All,

The US immigration website states that that all applicants must obtain a police certificate if the period of stay in a country is 12 months or longer. I have recently lived in a country other than the country of my nationality for about 361 days. This is just shy of 4 days to be counted as a period of exactly 12 months, i.e. 11 months and 27 days.

Technically, it does not seem like I am required to get a police certificate but I am not sure whether the consulate would consider my stay as 12 months since it is pretty darn close. What do you think - am I obligated to obtain a police certificate from that country?

Thanks,

DJ

I think I would still get one to be on the safe side - you can never have enough information to give. The worst they can do is say its not necessary but at least you will CYA if they do decide to be picky.

You are under 12 months not required I was the same as you lived in the UK don't waste your money. Will give one tip if you have lived in multiple states and territories in Australia you will only require a Federal Police Certificate not one from every where you have lived.

Thanks for the input guys - sorry about the iffy question - but just to be sure I'll send a quick email to the consulate to see what they have to say before spending money on something I might not really need.

Cheers Mark for the AFP certificate advice.

DJ the consulate won't really give you the reply you need trust me on this. When I was in England they are interested in is how long you resided in the country the other time I was traveling I resided and worked for 11.5 months so calculate that you will find you might have resided for 9 months for example so fill out your application reflecting your time in residenace. That's the key word residence.

DJ any other questions ask me mate I learnt a lot about this whole process if I had my time again I would have used a immigration lawyer.
