As far as Petty Officer Wools traveling to Indonesia, I regret to inform you that all US government personnel (which includes military members) are not allowed to travel to areas that are under the a US State Department “Travel Warning”, unless the visit is for official government purposes. The State Department issued a travel warning for Indonesia since the 2003 bombing in Bali and the warning is still in effect. Wonderful, dunno what to tell my parents now. Hi Mom, Dad, what about a marriage in Singapore? tee hee.... :/ this is not fair. I wish getting a tourist visa to the states is not that hard....

I don't understand. He filed for a K1 for you to travel to the US and marry him in the US. That's the purpose of a K1. Why are you talking about getting married in Singapore?

Maybe I dont understand the question....has he not been able to come see you at all? I am not sure how this would affect the wedding in any way with a K1...unless the requirement for 'met in person' had not been furfilled.

hmm.. this didn't seem so confusing to me, don't understand why it was so confusing to others...

Seems that Detty knows that she has to get married here in the US. One of her questions was how to get her parents able to come attend the wedding. Well Detty, I'm not from one of the countries you listed, but I'm sure that the chances of getting your parents to attend your wedding here... is practically zero. Not because they are from Muslim countries, but because getting USA tourist visas from MOST countries are very difficult, and practically impossible.

Many couples have the initial wedding ceremony here, and then have a secondary ceremony for the K1's family back in their home country. Obviously, that can't happen as long as her fiance is considered "US government personnel". I think that's what is meant by her comment of having her parents attend a wedding in Singapore.

Something like that, getting re-married in a neutral country, might be the best way to go, Detty.

Maybe it would have been clearer if the question was about tourist visas. In any event, your answer was quite correct and Detty your first order of business is to begin researching tourist visa options in Singapore for your parents. If it turns out that it is not an option, perhaps you can have a second ceremony with your family in a third location as recommended, once you have AP.

I guess Singapore should be the best place. My parents shouldn't have any problem going there cuz we do not need Visa to visit Singapore (ASEAN Countries' Commitment). Just worried that we know nobody there who could help us in arranging the wedding.

For others who got confused, I made a compromise with my parents that we would come down to Indonesia so they could arrange the formal wedding and all, after my fiance and I get married in the States. But we can't do that now, of course and seems like my fiance wouldn't be able to visit my parents in indonesia until he gets out of the Navy which is in 2010.....

I am from Malaysia and underwent K-1 visa & AOS (my stats are filed under my husband's ID "Miwa"). My parents and sister had no problems obtaining the tourist visa to visit US for my wedding. In addition, a number of my cousins have visited US with no problems.

I believe that your family will need to prove ties to Indonesia should they wish to obtain the tourist visa. My parents' proof was their assets (house and bank accounts) and my sister's was her steady long term job in Malaysia (letter from employer stating length of employment and that she'll continue to be employed by them and her tax returns).

I had an acquaintance from Indonesia (but successfully obtained her PR through another manner) who had her family attend her wedding here in US too. Good luck!
