It would seem if I wanted to work as a Photographer, I would do better to join an organization which was open to everyone.

I don't get how narrowing your contacts and resources is an answer.

Now ON a social level, I get it, I just don't see the "need" professionally or educationally being met by limiting your scope of contacts/

Not narrowing but having a back up place to go to when people only see your blackness instead of your unique personality, experience and education. To have a chance when no one wants you to have one.

No I mean black as in Jamal, Deshawn, or Darius.

Please tell the truth. I know people don't usually do this on the internet. Edited by Janelle2002

Obama is half white. Sorry because he has blackness in him you have excluded him from the white list. A purely dark skinned black guy would have never been voted in. Period

Well there you have it. Obama is not black

Some here have been saying that for quite sometime

It would be difficult for me to blend into Asian society too but that obstacle would not make me consider their society "supremacist", it is kinda bizarre you use that kind of term in 2014.

We must draw a distinction between organization geared towards "helping" those in need and those groups for which the association is based on "self advancement" or recreation.

Diversity-

I asked for specifics, on how diversity made america "great", you failed to list one way.

I would grant you that Diversity makes the country more interesting, especially when looking for a dinner out but the truth is, diversity is either meaningless or an obstacle.

Even in the micro experience we see this.

If I were to walk on to a job site of all Black masons, how would their work improve by mixing in a few white or hispanic guys?

People bring talents and skills, those are the areas of diversity which make for greatness, not a buffet of languages and colors.

Those things have little meaning and often are the cause for acrimony.

Now I will give you another go at it.

Specifically- How is America made great by diversity? In what way?

I am not here to give you a lesson in history or sociology for that matter. Don't get mad at me if you're too lazy to research the various contributions different groups who came to this country contributed to all walks of life including infrastructure, engineering, science, math are you kidding me? Many German Jewish scientist came here in the early 20th century to escape persecution from nazis and contributed to our engineering and science fields. One of those men was a great American named Albert Einstein - unless you consider his contributions meaningless or an obstacle.....The Chinese contributed to the construction of railroads, engineering techniques in the mining industry which expanded the West....Africans, slaves and descendants of such created new agriculture techniques such alternating crops to not deplete the soil and not even mentioning the physical labor which built the North and fueled the Souths economic engine. You can't have it both ways and discount innovations and inventions and then ask what talents and skills people bring.

You don't get the luxury of defining "diversity" or multi-multiculturalism to fit into your limited definition.

I'll give you another go at telling me how diversity has NOT made this country great, Mr. Dixie

I respect that others have experiences different than mine and if you and others see value in these associations, who am I too doubt that.

I will say this- I can't imagine me joining a group of former Marines which excluded black Marines.

If we were to not join places that formerly excluded blacks, hell all black people would be unemployed. Almost every company in the U.S. used to exclude blacks. Are you kidding?

Well shoveling chit, or frying fries are not my ideas of a good job. I'm talking about quality places that would actually pay a decent salary. Do not patronize me.

I had a feeling you would come back with "Do your own research man"

LOL

Look the fact is, this country is great because it unleashed people to be free to pursue their own interests. Free from a domineering Gov't and free to profit from the labor of their hands.

These ideas took a newborn country and propelled it into greatness.

These ideas did not just happen in a vacuum , they were the evolution of the man-Gov't relationship which had been evolving for centuries in Europe.

So we see a certain "citizen-govt'" evolve one which required a certain kind of people to take root and grow.

even by 1960 the USA was about 90% Euro-American, does it make any sense to claim "diversity made us great" when we were great long before we started down the path of Diversity?

This country was more white than many Muslin countries are Muslim or Asian countries are asian.

Truth is, what little diversity we had caused enough problems...... when you consider nearly every riot in this country could be chalked up to diversity.

Prior to 1965 our greatest source of diversity was religion, almost all Christian but wildly diverse in practice.... and even that cause some clique-ishness and division.

Great Ideas and the people who made them happen are what made this country great... not those who swung a 9 lb hammer on the railroad

or shoveled coal or picked cotton. Without the guys with IDEAS.... there would be no coal mines railroads or sugarcane to chop.

Maybe I did. I wasn't sure if you were pulling my leg or standing beside me. smile.png

Seriously have you ever seen real overt Racism. The kind that was prevalent in this Nation in the 60's and 70's. Do you recall separate fountains, bathrooms, and waiting rooms, work camps in which blacks could land for most any reason, some powerful local white thought up. Do you recall blacks using the back door or attending separate schools. Do you recall thinking most black men's first name was boy?

Well well, the next time I have an idea I will just find a slave to make it a reality and call myself a great thinker and inventor.

Glad we agree.

Nope but I was around for being called an N more than once when I was a child, I was around to hear my brothers called boy, and when my dad saved up money to pay for our Karate lessons all the kids moved to the side because they refused to practice side by side with a ( fill in the blank)

IS this what we do, we look back in history and claim it for our own present?

Name for me the companies which have excluded you?

Rather than being thankful you are in a country on the cutting edge of social evolution you cling to other peoples past.
