Thanks. My loan refunds come in in February, so hopefully very soon. I'm lucky - she's already in Jozi. Just hoping against the odds that the medical exam might be covered under her aid. With the extra flight excluded and not counting his flight here, would you say it was in the 1000-1500 ballpark for South Africa? Does any debt I have (medical bills, student loans) negatively affect this or not really?

Once she's done the medical she should submit the claim to medical aid. Coverage schemes vary, and it also depends on exactly what she gets done at the medical e.g. if she needs extra vaccinations. Most people get something back, but it's unlikely to be the full amount. Generally 50-75% depending on scheme. They won't pay it in advance or directly to the doctor so she will need the cash upfront.

Since you haven't even begun to compile your documents, I'd say your probably too late for a Fall, 2014 visa (might be very close if you'd be submitting now). It is was it will be. Follow the process and don't plan anything until you have the visa in hand.
