Hi All,

quick background, I got married Feb 8, 2013. Filed a petition, and my wife finally arrived here in the US on Dec 12, 2013. As of today (Jan 27) she still hasn't received her SSN, and we are planning go tomorrow morning to take care of it.

My question is, since technically, I was married last year, and my wife moved here last year, (both events happened within the same tax year), Can I file my tax return as Married, even though she will potentially receive her SSN number in a different tax year. (My wife never applied for an ITIN, because We were hoping that she could get a SSN this year).

Filling our Tax return jointly and as married could save us a lot of money, but I dont want to get into trouble doing this. Advice would be really helpful. Another thing, if you guys know of certain places I can ask this specific question.

ya, won't matter, as to WHEN the SSN was assigned.

I am surprised, though, that you were thinking something might come in without visiting a SSA office, prior - even with that tickbox on the form,

it's 50/50 that she'd actually get it without visiting the SSA office,

and is written about, here, often.

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !
Ya know, you can find the answer to your question with the advanced search tool, when using a PC? Ditch the handphone, come back later on a PC, and try again.

yeah? So I can filed jointly as married? I was hoping that ssn date didnt matter, because it doesnt state that in all in writing. What stated in writing is when you were married.

Like you said its 50/50. People have prescribed to wait for atleast 3 weeks then follow up. But I agree with you, I should have just gone to the ssa office and filed for one.
