But it's been more than a month since my husband arrived on a CR-1 visa and still no number or correspondence from the SS Administration. Is it normal for it to take this long to get the number? Has anyone who requested on their visa application to have the number automatically assigned actually gotten it and how long did it take? Should I take him to the SS Office to apply instead?

Any information would be much appreciated.

Thanks!

BethAnn

We ticked yes and it never arrived - waited over six weeks so we ended up going to the office to get it.

I can't remember anyone here who didn't have to chase it up.

If it's been more than 3 weeks since POE and haven't gotten the SSN in the mail, then yes, go to the local SSA office and apply in person. Most people have to do this as the card never arrives. This is what I had to do. Visit the SSA website and see what documents need to be brought. It's a really simple process. I was in and out within 15 minutes. Received my card in the mail less than 2 weeks later. You can check exact dates in my signature below.

We also ticked yes to have his SS assigned. Within a week after his arrival we both went to the SS office and was informed that it would be mailed 2 weeks after arrival. Approximately one day before the end of the 2 weeks, we received the SS in the mail, which came just in time for a interview.

I suggest you take a trip to SS and find out if a number was in fact assigned and if yes, kindly ask them for a print out of the number until the card arrives in the mail.
