Hi,

My wife has submitted her I-751 and we have the NOA with the 1 year extension. Her GC just expired on January 25. We were able to get her drivers license extended one year using the extension letter prior to her GC expiring. The person at the DMV insisted we needed a new GC before she could extend the drivers license but we finally convinced her to talk to her supervisor since we knew better. This made us a bit nervous.

Now that my wife's GC has expired and we are waiting for ROC approval is it safe to travel outside of the country? Has anyone had any issues coming back into the U.S. with an expired GC and the extension letter? Please share your experiences!

Thanks!

While I was going through my ROC process, I visited Canada. You just need to have the expired green card, passport, and ORIGINAL extension letter (a copy will NOT work). As soon as I got up to the US border counter on my return flight, I just handed everything over. It took longer than usual to let me through, but he was just doing a bunch of things on his computer (likely checking that I did indeed file my ROC paperwork). I wasn't asked any questions (besides what I was doing in Canada). It was a simple process, just took a bit longer than usual, then I was on my way.

Nothing to be worried about as long as you have the three above documents!
