Single Parents block upward mobility says New Harvard Study

Chetty... has been careful to stress that this research cannot prove causation—that removing or adding these factors will cause mobility in America. The study also acknowledges that many of these key factors are correlated with one another, such as income inequality and the share of single mothers in a community. This means that economic inequality may degrade the two-parent family or that increases in single parenthood may increase economic inequality. But what does seem clear from this study of the “land of opportunity” in America is that communities characterized by a thriving middle class, racial and economic integration, better schools, a vibrant civil society, and, especially, strong two-parent families are more likely to foster the kind of equality of opportunity that has recently drawn the attention of Democrats and Republicans alike.

The key point is in the bolded.

How is it that the article and the study mentions several factors that negatively impact upward mobility, yet the OP harps on just the single parents. No one wants to address the other issues brought out in the article, like segregation, and lack of quality schools?

A school district near me ranks in the top 10 dollars spent per pupil..(in the US)..Teachers ave over 60,000 after 10 years.

80 % of black african males do not make it past the 10th grade. .... Is there a lack of "quality" or is it because the average student misses over 60 days of school just due to not showing up for class. When a parent teachers night is held only a handful of parents attend. Single households are a major cause of poverty and as most of them are women that get or keep the children ,,,,yes harp on it. In the wall street journal this weekend talks about poverty in the coal areas of kentucky. (white folks for the racist on here)... A girl is at poverty level (married ) at age 16.... Don't you think that you set yourself out to fail if you get married at age 16 and stop your schooling. If 80 percent of black african male cannot get past the 10 th grade.....in some sections of this country what difference if "segeration"plays a part. Most of the jobs will be held by undocumented democrats. At a 10th grade level where are you going today ???

you have serious issues with correlation and causation.

The OP's only intention is to make this another black bashing post, not address all issues involved. Got to love this guy's creativity.

Please provide a link showing it's 80% of black males not graduating.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/local/education/high-school-graduation-rate-rises-in-us/2012/03/16/gIQAxZ9rLS_story.html

Researchers found that graduation rates vary by race, with 91.8 percent of Asian students, 82 percent of whites, 65.9 percent of Hispanics and 63.5 percent of blacks graduating on time.

So you're looking at 36.5% that don't graduate. Thats a 44.4% difference in what you're saying.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/09/19/black-male-hs-graduation-_n_1896490.html

WASHINGTON -- More than half the young black men who graduated high school in 2010 earned their diploma in four years, an improved graduation rate that still lagged behind that of their white counterparts, according to an education group's report released Wednesday.

The Schott Foundation for Public Education, which has tracked graduation rates of black males from public schools since 2004, said 52 percent of black males who entered ninth grade in the 2006-07 school year graduated in four years. That compared with 78 percent of white, non-Latino males and 58 percent of Latino males.

Even back 9 years ago, it was over 50% which would have resulted in a 48% dropout rate.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/answer-sheet/wp/2013/06/06/u-s-high-school-graduation-rate-sees-big-minority-gains-analysis/

Hispanic graduation rates jumped 16 points over a decade, hitting 68 percent for the class of 2010. Black graduation rates jumped 13 percentage points over a decade, hitting 62 percent in 2010. Whites saw a 6 percent graduation rate increase over the same period, to 80 percent; Asians, a 5 percent increase, to 81 percent. Native Americans saw a 3 percent rise in graduation rates, to 51 percent.

I'm confused, you said 80% of black males don't graduate, but the numbers seem to be half of that. Care to elaborate?

You're welcome Janelle. It's funny that folks would rather follow a bigoted, hateful, and narrow minded narrative that actually have a sensible debate to challenge their point of view. Lost has been saying this for a while, I've just ignored it since he usually attacks black folks in some ignorant fashion.

So what's your solution to this complex social problem that has baffled successive governments for generations?

Successive governments were not baffled by this complex social problem. Each side, for it's owns reasons, had no great desire, when in power, to fundamentally change the paradigm and improve things. <_<

I don't agree. I've had some deep discussions with certain members that have yielded positive results on both sides. I've learned some things I didn't know before, and vice versa for the other person.
