Woot - last leg of our immigration journey - daughter's citizenship!

Well yesterday we finally mailed off my 22 yr old daughter's N-400 - the last $680 I'll ever pay USCIS and I am not sorry to say that!

If all goes well, citizenship applications are going through our local office in about 3-4 months start to finish (a friend and her husband just finished doing it recently). I am super happy that we're in the last leg of our immigration journey and will NEVER EVER have to do more fingerprints, worry about where the greencards are etc.... I felt an immense amount of relief when I walked out a citizen 2 yrs ago myself.

The only thing I have to worry about is whether my ADHD child has bothered to study the 100 questions at least 10 minutes prior to the interview ;P

To all those who think it seems like forever, I am here to say that 6 yrs later after the day we arrived in the US from Ontario it seems like only yesterday.

Did you move to the US via K-1 fiance visa? I am so curious!

I am a CSC just approved through the K-1 visa. I was thinking about 'years down the road' if I could become a dual citizen. Are you dual as well?

Applied for Naturalization based on 3-year Residency 

July 05, 2017 (Day 00) -  Submitted N400 Application, filed via USPS to Phoenix Lockbox

July 10, 2017 (Day 05) - NOA received

July 12, 2017 (Day 07) -  Check is cashed by USCIS

July 19, 2017 (Day 14) - Biometrics appointment letter mailed

August 02, 2017 (Day 28) - Biometrics appointment at Seattle Field Office

August 28, 2017 (Day 54) - Case is "in line" for an interview"

August 28, 2018 (Day 419) - Interview is scheduled

October 4, 2018 (Day 462) - Citizenship Interview AND Oath (offered same day oath by ISO in Seattle, WA)

 

Officially a U.S. Citizen - Proud to be an American

Yes down the road, you can have dual citizenship--Cdn/USA!! Just keep in mind, that the USA allows it--but really only sees you as American.

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied,that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

Just out of curiosity - do adults, when applying, have to take the test (and study the 100 questions) too? :)

USCIS (192 days, August 24 2011 to March 2 2012. No RFE's).
NVC (30 days, March 12 to April 11. Case expedited due to NVC errors).

Montreal US Consulate, awaiting interview date (14 days, April 12 to April 26).

05/09/2012 - medical in Toronto - passed!
05/22/2012 - interview - passed!
05/25/2012 - visa in hand!!! biggrin.png
06/09/2012 - POE @ YWG (Winnipeg Int'l Airport)

Removal of Conditions submitted March 24, 2014, received March 26, 2014

"RFE" for page 3 of application received, date March 27, 2014. Package re-submitted with all papers re-attached.

04/07/2014 - NOA1 Date

05/07/2014 - Biometrics in Charlotte, NC

11/05/2014 - APPROVED! Citizenship in 5 months!

11/10/2014 - NOA2 in hand.

11/20/2014 - 10 yr GC in hand! :D

EVERYONE takes the test! The questions are all online and out of the 100 questions, they ask you 10---no surprises

Yes everyone is obliged to answer the 10 questions during the interview - if you get the 1st 6 correct they don't continue :) (How anyone fails is beyond me unless language is a challenge)

Congrats Udella, I worry about the same thing with my oldest if he will read the test questions. My two older boys will be sending out their packages in March, we are waiting till after I have this baby boy to ship it out. Should time the test when they are not in school too.

Congratulations and good luck Udella,

I know this has been a long time coming. You may see if your daughter is interested in using the Citizenship Flash Cards to study for the test. They may be easier for her to apply herself since she doesn't need to sit down and focus on all of the questions at once. I found them useful - just divided them into groups of 3: answers I definitely knew; answers I definitely didn't know; and answers I thought I knew but wasn't really sure. Whenever I had a few minutes I would just pick up one of the piles and go through a few of the questions and answers. Eventually, the cards all made their way over to the 'answers I definitely knew' pile.

Actually I only go the minimum to pass!! lol I knew the answers, but screwed up,lol!! Busy studying for nursing exams! The dude didn't give me a chance to change my answer,lol
