Immigration "interview" before departing Europe to the US on VWP?

Hi,

Apologies if this is posted in the wrong forum or is completely irrelevant, I'm just curious. I recently traveled to the US via Amsterdam (VWP), and when I arrived at the gate passport control to board my flight to the US, everyone were taken aside by security agents (I think - the logo on their shirts is from a security company as far as I know) and asked a LOT of questions - the nature of your trip, what is your relationship with the person you're staying with, how long have you known each other, what does he do for a living, do you have any ID besides your passport, how did you pay for your ticket, do you have the credit card you used to pay, who packed your suitcase, etc. Then he put a sticker on the back of my passport with some scribbles on it and sent me on.

This is my fifth time traveling to the US through Amsterdam airport, and I've never had this happen before. Has any of you had similar experiences? Is this some kind of new security routine they've just established? I still had to go through immigration in Detroit as usual, but not with nearly as many questions...

Don't feel singled out. I have seen this on flights from the US to Europe and Europe to US. I'm a USC and I was pulled aside when I was traveling thru Frankfurt. It is just a security check to read people. If they felt your answers weren't truthful, they would have denied you boarding. This has been going on for a few years now.

I see. I've probably just been lucky never to have gone through that before - it was a bit nerve-wracking even if I had nothing to be nervous about, we haven't even started our application process yet. Thanks for taking the time to reply. :)

I've seen the same thing happen 10+ years ago. I remember boarding a flight from San Francisco to London and CBP officers were waiting in the boarding tunnel checking passports and asking questions, it caught me off guard as I'd not seen it before.
