I'm not so sure.

Every sane gunner owner is just one emotion away from losing his sanity, same as every driver coming at you from the opposite direction, is one disappointment away from crossing the median, and running into you head on. If I don't trust other drivers to stay on their side of the road, I certainly don't trust people with guns.

Who said distribute as many as possible? If gun numbers are to be reduced, the Constitution needs to be changed and legal gun owners will have to be forced to turn in their guns. Neither is going to happen, IMO. There are 300 million guns out there. It will take a thousand years before they rust away. How about we enforce the laws we currently have instead of making new ones and not enforce them either? It's already illegal to own a gun illegally.

The vast majority of sane people are far further from snapping than you imagine. It's the borderline cases, those who are close to their breaking point already, that are one step from the edge. The skill is in reading and interpreting the signs, and there will be signs, and stopping them taking that last step.

And knowing someone who, quite possibly, is still alive because someone saw the signs and reported them, most people see the signs, they just don't want to believe them, or let on that they could have done something after a tragedy occurs.

Anyone who owns a gun is gun nut per my definition? That's news to me. When did I define gun nut that way? Besides, we're not allowed to use the term gun nut around here. Say, how many more gun deaths would there be? Between homicides, accidents, "justified" shooting deaths and suicides, we have 30 some odd thousand gun deaths a year. Those are all perpetrated by just a few nuts? Seriously? Think of the guy who shot a man in the movie theater "in self defense" just recently. A nut with a gun. Just since that day, though, right? He's never done any harm with his gun - until that day when he snapped and shot and killed another man in cold blood over nothing. And that's the story all too often. Which is why this country in many ways feels more like a banana republic than a civilized nation.
