Hello VJers,

My brother and I have been in the US for quite a while now. Our parents and younger brother are left behind as they have no interest on immigrating to another country. Recently, our Mom started her hemodialysis therapy and will be doing it twice a week for the rest of her life. She has been dealing with renal disease for quite a long time now. Our brother has to quit his job, prompting his wife to work long hours. He decided to move in with our parents to help our Dad take care of Mom. The cost of dialysis, cocktail of medications and other incidental expenses are astronomical and we have just started.

We are planning on bringing Mother over here so she can be treated at the Dialysis Center where my brother works and possibly enroll her in one of our health insurance as dependent. Dad decided to stay at this time but we need our brother to help us take care of Mom......and we are not sure if this is even possible. Your input is highly appreciated!

Thank you in advance.

Make sure you can enroll a parent. Usually health insurance only permits spouses or children to be included in your plan. She would have to be an LPR most likely to be added if that is even possible. It will take about a year for her paperwork to finish and the visa to be issued (if it is).

Thank you belinda63. My insurance includes parents but will have to check on pre-existing condition. Did you mean a year from the time of filing? We'd like to start petition now but knowing she is sick, we are not sure if she is going to pass medical clearance. Somebody told me we cannot petition siblings.... ;(

Thanks,

hi

if you are a USC over 21 you can petition for your mom for a GC. unfortunately your brother cannot come. there aren't any derivatives on parents petitions

if you file for your brother it can take over 12 years of waiting. so if your mom comes, who would take care of her, since your brother cannot come?

as I stated before, siblings are filed separately. there are no derivatives on parents petitions. parents are filed separately and so are siblings

maybe decide for both parents to immigrate and your dad can take care of your mom? even if you could have her under your insurance, that type of care is very expensive, so if you think it's astronomical over there, it might be worse here. you might want to rethink things and just send them the money

the cost of having them here, plus healthcare

Thank you aleful. If my brother could not come, we might have to convince our Dad. Right now, we are trying to get info it is even feasible to petition her. We are trying to figure out what is best for her at this time.....she does not even want to come - this is our biggest problem. We are hoping we can spend time with the family while she is still around......

It's not "if" your brother can't come. He can't come. There is no way for him to immigrate with your parents.

ditto

he won't be able to come now, and she doesn't want to come, then help them by sending money and try to visit them. you go to them, it will be and uphill and very stressful battle for them, and not good for your mother's health

Whatever the cost is where she is it is going to be a LOT more in the US, and somebody will need to sponsor her, you or your Brother presumably.

My Parents have now passed away, but getting them Insurance then seemed an impossibility. I am surprised that they could be included under your own arrangement's, are you sure, have you checked the cost?

We do have Obamacare, and how much that would cost depends, but it would be more than $1,000 a month and of course they will be other costs.

I assume you are a US Citizen, you did not say.

If your Brother is not working then if she came here and he went back to work then he could help with the costs?

My heart goes out to you. Has your family researched Peritoneal Dialysis options yet? You can get the machine for around $25,000 (costly I know) and there are international organizations who assist with acquiring this and cost associated with it is much less than Hemodialysis in the long run. I have clients who are in the reverse situation in that they are currently here in the US and want to return their home country but cannot afford the treatment there and this has been a viable option for them. Anyway, just my two cents and best of luck.
