You do this http://www.visajourney.com/content/k1k3aos and it costs $1070. This step is probably harder than the K-1 visa.

There is a whole forum devoted to AOS here. http://www.visajourney.com/forums/forum/7-adjustment-of-status-green-card-from-family-based-visas/

You put the new last name, and if you are changing it, the change is immediate.

Harpa, I'm curious why you think AOS for a K-1 is harder than the initial petition -- we've just gotten our EAD and have our GC interview date, and it's been a BREEZE compared to the I-129f and K-1 stuff. During AOS, as opposed to the K-1, there has been no wondering where the hell our petitions are, trying to track packages, no talking to multiple agencies and embassies, no having to gather documents and ship them around the globe ... just a moderate waiting period WITH my husband present as opposed to apart ... and the paperwork was really a lot simpler, IMO, than all the I-129f and medicals and police clearances and god, the K-1 was a headache compared to the straightforward AOS.

Sure, I'm collecting proof of comingling and such for the interview, but that comes naturally as we start a new life together, so I'm not feeling nearly as stressed out as I was during the 9 month K-1 process. I realize opinions and experiences vary, but I just wanted to say I've found the AOS process (so far!) refreshingly straightforward.

I agree, Harpa is way off, if you got your stuff together, AOS is a breeze,.,, we had GC, no interview, no cival surgeon, nothing in a few months,

As for K-1, 10 months 4 days, and unless I was visiting, apart from each other, and we were delayed nearly 3 months with the St. Luke's famous, """SPUTUN FIASCO""" which is the most ridiculous thing, that anyone ever encounterd!

So, I strongly disagree with Harpa, AOS, a breeze, K-1, pure ""H"".,.,.,.,glad it is over for nearly two year until ROC.,., will be ready.

Good, I'm glad you're having an easy time :) The reason I say it is more difficult is because it is a lot of forms at once and the K-1 process is more drawn out. Some people have easier embassies for the I-134 and are unprepared for the I-864. Figuring out the I-693 stuff is a pain. I see a lot of people complaining that AOS is harder than the K-1 visa.

But maybe it is to do with stress. Some people aren't stressed for the K-1 process and are content to wait to be contacted.

I have a question about Advanced Parole.

We are getting married as soon as I get the the USA at the courthouse but we are having a wedding in Mexico in October (even tho we will already be married). I am applying for avance parole, but Can I use it more then once? I would like to go back to Canada to visit family, I have a wedding to go to in Mexico in June, and our wedding is in Mexico in October! Should I just ask for parole to go to our wedding? or can I use it multiple times?

Thanks! smile.png

AP is multiple use, but it your interview is at the end of Feb, I am not sure you will have AP by June. It depends how fast you get your visa after the interview and how fast you can marry and prepare the AOS papers.

I-693 - you fill out your name and go to the doctor's office with your vaccination records from the interview, and then the doctor does the rest.

By far, AOS is a more standardized process. I think the foreign embassies need to get their acts together and follow a standard procedure. That would eliminate a lot of the need for country-specific information and make the K-1 process as easy/fast as AOS.
