I don't know if this applies in your case but food for thought. ACA requires you to take expanded Medicaid if you qualify for it. Medicaid is a public charge and couldn't find any distinction for expanded Medicaid. Clusterfffff

Yes, I noticed that while doing my research. What a bunch of bs. People like me get screwed. And I REALLY don't want to use regular Medicaid. I know it may cause problems with my green card application. Ugh.

An agent I contacted said I could apply for a private insurance but that would cost me over $300 per month. Ouch. No idea what to do.

Does anyone know anything in terms of the baby's health coverage? Also, if the baby comes after the March 31 deadline, will I have to wait until October to enrol the baby? That sounds ridiculous.

What a nightmare! I miss Canada!!

Only 300 dollars per month?! I would sign up in a heartbeat! That's a bargain compared to the thousands you will pay without health insurance. And God forbid what if it's a boy and you need to get him circumcised? Thats another 5 or 6 hundred dollars extra. (At least where we live) Medical insurance is very expensive but you really have to have it. It's a catch 22. If I were you I would buy the insurance right away.

Good Luck and God Bless

And congratulations on the upcoming birth of your baby...eh?

And congratulations on the upcoming birth of your baby...eh?

Thank you :)

As I've mentioned, I am currently covered under Medi-Cal Pregnancy Only which includes all my prenatal visits, ultrasounds, etc, delivery and 6 weeks post delivery (earlier I said 60 days, my bad), so I am not worried about this part.

What I'm worried is myself after my Medi-Cal coverage expires 6 weeks after giving birth to my baby. IF the baby (which is due March 30) comes after March 31 deadline, I'm screwed until October enrolment windows opens? If the baby comes BEFORE March 31, I might be eligible for Obamacare (though, I haven't' been a resident for over 5 years but from what I hear, it varies state to state - need to figure it out still) or will need to get the private insurance. BTW $300 per month sounds insane to me (in Europe, where I was born and raised it's free and in Canada, where I lived for 10 years, it's free as well).

My other concern is the baby. 1) if the baby qualifies for full MediCal - will it impact MY green card application 2) if the baby gets a plan under Obamacare but is born AFTER March 31, will the baby be without coverage until we can enrol the baby in October?

But I do not want Medicaid though. Again, I'm covered under Medi-Cal Pregnancy Only for the duration of my pregnancy + 6 weeks. I know that I am not eligible for full Medi-Cal. I wouldn't want the full Medi-Cal anyway because it could hurt my green card application.

I may still be eligible for a plan - partially subsidized. It varies state to state. When my husband played with the online tools, it looked as though I'd be covered. Some PPs mentioned they were able to enrol despite the fact that they have not received their green cards yet. Also, someone said here that if I get a plan under ACA, I will be still paying for it, hence I won't be considered a public charge.

For you the next window for Obamacare close at the end of March, you can see above that you are both eligible and required to obtain cover, you can do that through the Exchange or privately.

The child will be a USC and therefore not relevant to your adjustment process.

Sounds like the Baby may qualify for Medicaid, every state does it differently, I an sure there is plenty of info available locally. You are not eligible for Medicaid.

As you mentioned the cover you have now is very limited in scope.

Medi Cal I believe is CA's version of Medicaid.

Forget Medicaid, that was a list of who can buy through the Obamacare Exchange and has to, you are on it. How much it costs depends, you can find out going through the CA web site.

What cover does your Husband have?

I think I'm not making myself clear. I know that the enrolment closes on March 31. What if my baby comes AFTER March 31? It's possible that it will be a week or two past my March 30 due date. I do not want to lose my MediCal Pregnancy Only (my understanding is that if i get a different insurance, I have to notify MediCal and I lose it immediately), as not only will I have to pay out of pocket for the delivery, but also my doctor may not be taking whatever plan I qualify for. So, I can only apply AFTER I have the baby. This makes me super anxious.

He used to be with Kaiser but ended it in December as we all want to get the same/family plan. He works in a family business, so he doesn't get insurance through work.

As far as your personal dilema is concerned, it may well be like many things a situation nobody settingit up thought about, or cares about.

Lets see.

1, You are required since 1/1 to have approved cover. So is your husband.

2. You are not eligible for Medicare.Medi Cal. Your Husband maybe depending in his income.

3. You can get the Emergency version which makes me think your Husband does not earn that much and may be eligible for Medicare, and most likely your child will.

4. Despite the obligation for you to obtain cover that State will still give you the Emergency cover.

5. If you do get Obamacare then it could well be that the cover you buy for your current situation is worse than you are getting through Emergency Medicaid.

6. On the other hand the Emergency Medicaid does not cover anything other than Pregnancy, so if you get runover by the proverbial bus you are SOL.

7 If you do not sign up by the end of March, then you can not until the end of the year.

“If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.”

You are precisely right by law. I don't know if they fixed yet but as of a month ago, there was no question on the site to filter those with less than 5 years of permanent residence, just a question on if you arrived before or after 1996. When we tried to get insurance through it for my wife, they referred her to Medicaid. We did the app three times. The programmers forgot to put the filter in.

Late to the party here but...

My wife and I sent in our application for Obamacare (by mail because god only knows that our 1234234 tries to use the website didn't work) but I spoke to someone who said I can be added to the application as my wife's spouse for the purpose of the coverage, even if I didn't have my SSN, I have my I-94 number. It said you could use your passport number as well. I haven't filed for AOS yet (soon) and they told me it shouldn't be an issue.

I assumed all Canadians got an I-94, even if they cross the border via car? and if it wasn't stamped, it was available online?

Canadians that enter the US by land often do not receive I-94s or stamps. My wife did not receive one. As a Canadian LPR she was supposed to get a visa first (which she didn't know) and show her home country's passport, but the CBP officer let her in the US anyway. It earned us an RFE and hopefully will not be an issue at the interview.
