Interesting that head gear and beards would cause so much commotion and generate so much anxiety to some. Obviously they must think the military is a clique of Heathers...

The question we should ask their CO's is whether the bearded and turban-ed are individuals of valor, and if they are up to the task to defend our country. IMHO we should start the conversation by thanking them for their service, before trivializing it by critiquing their head gear or facial hair.

Sounds reasonable. To a person who isn't used to military ways.

Imagine being one of the 480,000 who aren't allowed to have a beard, serving side-by-side with the 3,000 who are allowed just because of a religious excuse? The military should not conform to the individual, the individual should conform to the regulations of the military. Double standards will cause a huge problem, I think. Might be wrong...

But where do you draw that line? Religion? Sexual orientation? Why not let gun owners carry concealed on military bases? That's another constitutional right, isn't it?

Sounds reasonable as well, for someone who is not familiar with how the military works.

Since neither of us can provide a qualified opinion, I move that we let the military decide on that. They should know better than all of us put together, imho.

I'm pretty familiar with it. My opinion IS qualified. I qualified it. I can send you my certification, if you request it in triplicate after the second Tuesday of next week.

Today's military leadership is more worried about politics and their jobs than about the strength and good discipline of the troops. But I imagine that is a trend that could have been seen 50 years ago, too. Not ALL change is good, unfortunately.

As is mine. In this case, we should let the military decide on it. I am sure they are more qualified than you to make that call.

It says right there, in the copy quoted in the very first post of this thread: 'The Pentagon...' Anyone familiar with the US military knows that the Pentagon is where these policies are made.

Honey, you obviously don't know Jack nor shite about what we call each other in the military. But nice try.

What I have an issue with is that if someone claims a "strong religious belief", they can get around military regulations and wear alternative headgear, grow long hair, wear beards, and wear tattoos that the rest of the military are not allowed to. It's just not right, but I don't expect you to have one iota of understanding.

Honey? Nice.

Fancy a bit of misogyny today did we?

It's an example of how people get bent out of shape over something that does not affect them and has no discernable impact on anything.

The very definition of hyperbole.

and we should allow everyone to have whatever hair length they wish, and wear whatever they wish?

and we should ask the CO's as suggested. I bet over 95% would say NO WAY!
